This is the Maxol Petrol Station in Blarney. This is a long exposure shot and I just managed to get the Cork-Blarney bus in the frame!

The Signs in Blarney
The signs in Blarney always point towards a B&B!
This bunch of signs do anyway. Right at the end of Station Road there’s a pole with signs to about a dozen B&Bs! If you ever need somewhere to stay in Blarney you shouldn’t have trouble finding accomodation!
Link of the Day
If you haven’t read any of the The Digital Journalist yet then the January issue is a good place to start! I found dispatches for Iraq and Bolivia rivetting and scary and exciting.
In a compeltely different way, Bill Pierce’s memories of the late Michael Evans will stir your heart. He did a great job writing about his friend.
Sunlit Web
On a foggy morning a web will sparkle in the ambient light because of the moisture in the air.
I spent an inordinate amount of time crouched down shooting this dead bush!

- Retouching Magazine Cover – magazine photos have to feature pixel perfect beautiful men and women. This girlpower Flash presentation goes through all the little touch ups that go into improving a model’s eye, nose, cheeks, lips, breasts, waist and more until she is not the person who stood in the studio. - Digital Photography World has published some great articles recently including image management now that he’s gone completely digital.
- John Engler’s photography section of his blog has lots of good stuff, including 3 introductory articles: What’s an SLR Anyways?, Film Speed, Aperture. (via)
- I posted the last two US photos: Chatting and Shopping and Crowded Cork. The collection is complete!
Don’t go to bed reading a photographic book, you’ll get up again to “try out” the new techniques you read about.
A rose by any other colour
One of the Blarney Castle roses.
The original was very saturated and detail was lost in the bright red of the petals. Making a monochrome image made the detail stand out and drops became visible again.
A little dodge and burn to finish.
Castle in Monochrome
Blarney Castle, taken moments before clouds completely covered the sky.

Lights From the Middle
Standing in the middle of the road outside Blarney.
Blarney Castle Stairway
Climbing to the top of Blarney Castle requires a climb up steep stairs that get narrower and smaller as you reach the top. It’s not for the faint hearted or claustrophobic!
Matt and Donncha
Matt and I pictured in front of Blarney Woollen Mills!
