Old Shed in Camden Fort

Camden Fort near Crosshaven in Co Cork was part of a photowalk last Sunday and we visited Spike Island on Saturday, it was great visiting such historical sites. We were so lucky with the weather as the rain stayed off and Camden Fort on Sunday was bathed in strong sunlight!

Both sites are still being developed. Camden Fort is manned by volunteers with a few people paid by FAS who helped clear 21 years of undergrowth and weeds. You should visit and talk to the volunteers as they’re so enthusiastic about the project and friendly you’ll spend quite a lot of time talking! Our trip to Spike Island was way too short and we all agreed that we didn’t have enough time to explore it fully.

Corned Brisket

One of the many butchers in The English Market. I’ve had brisket a few times, but only ever in the USA. Doesn’t seem to be a popular cut of meat here.

On the Boardwalk

On the Boardwalk

Phew! What a day! Today we had a great photowalk in Cork. I hesitate to say this, but I think it was probably the most enjoyable photowalk I’ve ever been on.

We started out in the Montenotte Hotel, with tea and scones and a chat. After refreshments we headed up on the roof for a stunning view of Cork City and the Blackrock side of the suburbs. I’ve never seen into Pairc Ui Chaoimh from above like that before!

Soon after we headed down to Dillon’s Cross, and on down Summerhill. Halfway down we took a detour here where we got splendid views of the train station and Julia, the new Swansea Cork Ferry that will operate from March next year.

Snapping all the way, we headed into town and on to the Bar and Grill on the Boardwalk, pictured above. That’s my son Adam, who’s contemplating if he should go in, or stay outside where he can run around. Hungry dad won out in the end and had a delicious burger.

I had to leave after lunch, but four lucky photographers went out on the speedboat and by at least one account it was well worth doing!

I just want to thank the following for helping to make today such a success:

  • Pat O Neill and Damien Mulley who helped organise things
  • The Montenotte Hotel for laying on tea and scones, and letting us up on their roof (and of course for the free and subsidised rooms)
  • The Boardwalk Bar and Grill who put on a sumptuous lunch for us and put up with curious photographers scrambling over their water feature and poring over the unusual Harley Davidson section at the back!
  • And finally, I want to thank everyone who came along today and really made the photowalk so enjoyable. I hope I have everyone here: Jamie (and Nora!), Ryan and Julie, Katie, Rudy, Paul, Pa, Mark, Kevin, Will (better late than never!), my wife Jacinta and son Adam who joined us later, and of course Pat who had dusted off a long forgotten digital camera to walk with us today.

Montenotte Photowalk

When: Saturday 26th of September at 10am.
Where: Start at the Montenotte Hotel (map), Cork and continue into town.
Who: Me, you and anyone who likes taking photographs.

So, next photowalk is on the 26th. It’s a Saturday but this time it’s early in the morning at 10am. We’ll start at the Montenotte Hotel, where we (or some of us) may get access to the roof to shoot a cityscape of Cork City. Bring your wide angle and telephoto lenses!

After that it’s a stroll down the hill to Dillon’s Cross, and then wherever we fancy. We’ll be close enough to the train station to pop over there (although there may be questions of public liability insurance if we go in there as a group unfortunately).

We can head down to the quay then and on towards the bus station and into town or towards City Hall. Wherever.

Will suggested having a scavenger hunt on the walk which is a great idea. Anything else we can do to mix it up a bit?

As I mentioned previously, The Montenotte Hotel is putting on a special deal for us photowalkers:

As a special deal for photographers, the hotel is setting aside 20 rooms for us on the night of the 25th. 17 are discounted with single rooms costing 39 Euro including breakfast and double/twin rooms at 29 Euro/pp, also including breakfast.
After the photowalk we’ll descend on the Boardwalk Bar & Grill for a complementary lunch, and there may even be an opportunity for a select few to head out on a speed boat along the river.

The 3 free rooms are already allocated but that still leaves the 17 discounted ones. If you’re interested, email Pat O Neill at pat @ hotelconsult.ie and he’ll organise the room for you. Don’t bother ringing the hotel.

I guess the complementary lunch was originally intended for those who stayed in the hotel but as the take up of the rooms on Friday night has been so slow I don’t know for sure what’s happening. I’m pretty certain the ride in the speed boat is still on though. I’ll pass on that, I prefer to stay on land!

So, if you’re interested in going on the photowalk please leave a comment here! This doesn’t mean you’re going to stay in the hotel. I don’t want to hear about it. I just want to go on a photowalk. Email Pat if you want to stay at the hotel! (it is a good deal, and the hotel is a gorgeous one!)

If you left a comment on the previous post expressing interest in the walk, please leave a comment here again, just so we have a rough idea of numbers without having to go digging into old posts.

If you don’t want to walk up the hill to the hotel, meet us in town later. I’m not sure how we’ll organise this but it’ll probably be “12 noon at the bus station” or some such arrangement.

Walking the photos in Cork

Here’s a possible route for our 2 hours photowalk around Cork today:

  • Start at the GPO, near the big A marker above.
  • Head south (down) to the river to Morrison’s Quay where we can shoot Holy Trinity and the river bank of the South Channel.
  • Head west towards Sullivans Quay where we can shoot Parliament Bridge and St Finbarre’s Cathedral in the distance.
  • Over either Nano Nagle bridge to the Grand Parade or the bridge to St Main Street. The old Beamish Brewery is on South Main street and we can then go back to Grand Parade.
  • Shoot the sparkling new streetscape of Grand Parade and then into The English Market.
  • Bump up the ISO and shoot indoors in the English Market.
  • Out again eventually and either wander over to Cornmarket Street or down Patrick Street to do some street photography.

Throwing a spanner in the works is the Lee Swim, a swim down the North Channel, around the tip near the docklands and up by the Clarion. Here’s the course map. It could be starting at 2pm and if it is, it would be worth our while heading down the Clarion to photograph the finish and the crowds. The Clarion itself is worth a look and the nearby Elysian too. I’ll update this post when I know more.

Worldwide Photo walk in Cork

On July 18th, photographers all over the world will be holding photowalks. There’s going to be events in Belfast, Dublin and Cork that day, and who knows. Might be a few more around the country by the time that day arrives!

I’ve just filled in a few details on the Cork Photowalk page on the Worldwide Photo Walk website. You can register on that page. While places are limited to 50, I’d be surprised if we get that many.

I think 2pm is a good time to start. It’ll give people a chance to grab a bite to eat, the city should be busy with shoppers and tourists, and the sun will have passed overhead, giving us some shade to play with. Is that too late? Too early? What about 10am in the morning? Town is nice and quiet in the morning but some people aren’t up that early at the weekend!

If you’re not in Cork on the 18th, there’s also a Dublin photowalk and a Belfast photowalk too. Dublin one is almost booked out though so hurry to register!

The River Lee runs through Cork City along two channels with an island in the middle. That island is where the City Center is and provides for plenty of opportunities shooting the river 🙂

Shandon Bells

The clock tower of St. Anne’s Church in Shandon is more well known as “Shandon Bells” after the bells that ring out there through out the day.

We were so lucky with the weather on Saturday on our little photowalk. Wasn’t it Aidan‘s idea to head up to Shandon? Inspired! Everyone had a great time. Next photowalk we’re heading up there again!

Doneraile Photowalk on June 8th

The month of June is going to be a busy and exciting one as the Midsummer Festival will be in full swing! To avoid clashes with any other event I think it’s better if the photowalk in Doneraile, Co. Cork be on Sunday June 8th before it starts at all.

Where: Doneraile Park, Co. Cork.
When: Sunday, 8th June. 3pm
Directions: Leave Cork going north through Blackpool towards Blarney and Mallow. Pass through Mallow and keep on the main road until you get to “New Twopothouse”. Doneraile town is sign posted there so take a right. When you get to the town go through it to the other side. You’ll see Doneraile Park sign posted. See the Google Map above, or check this one for the route.

Doneraile Park is a beautiful park with at least one river running through it, a small weir near the carpark. Deer and livestock can often be seen in some areas of the park as can fowl like ducks or swans. Doneraile House overlooks a large part of the park and is famous because a member of that household was the only female Freemason. The house was closed the last time I was there and I’m not sure if it’s ever open to the public. It faces north from what I can remember so you’d have to be there before noon to catch any sun on the front of the house.

Cork Midsummer Festival

If you can’t make it to Doneraile on the 8th, there’s still plenty happening in the weeks after as the festival starts on the 15th and continues for 3 weeks. I’m particularly interested in the following, mainly because they’re outdoors, and as they are in public places, photography won’t be a problem.

  • Sunday, June 15th from noon to 6pm. The Lord Mayor’s picnic in the park. Fun and games and food stalls in Fitzgerald’s Park, Cork. I was there a few years ago. Lots to see, plenty to photograph, although we’ll have to be considerate of children.
  • Saturday, June 21st. Shandon Street Festival. Music and entertainment on the street all day. At 1pm in front of Brown Thomas there will be a Bicycle Ballet. It lasts 30 minutes. Must try catch both.
  • Saturday and Sunday, June 28th to 29th. Senszione. Sounds like a weird fairground with unusual looking rides. Unfortunately it’s at 6.30pm, 7.45pm and 9pm. Both earlier times are bad for me, but I’ll try for 9pm. Bad light then of course but it can’t be helped.
  • Saturday, July 5th. Robodock. IAWS Warehouse, Cork Docklands at 3pm and 8pm. I’ll be going to the 3pm show. Remember those weird iron sculptures in Emmett Place on St. Patrick’s Day? Lots more of them. The Docklands is due to be developed so it’s worth getting down there if for no other reason than to record something that won’t be able to happen there again.

I almost forgot. The Cork City Marathon is on Monday, June 2nd. Grab your place at the finish line!
