The NRP Comandante João Belo (F480) in Cork

NRP Comandante João Belo (F480)

Back in 2005 many naval ships visited Cork Harbour and one of them was the NRP Comandante João Belo. According to this Wikipedia page it was sold to Uruguay but in 2005 it flew the colours of the Portuguese Navy.

You can find out more about this particular ship here but you’ll have to translate it to English if your Portuguese isn’t up to scratch.

In the background is the “Port of Cork” sign and the buildings of the now demolished Cork Bonded Warehouse.

Oh Look! The LÉ Samuel Beckett

Oh Look! The LÉ Samuel Beckett

I was photographing a paddle boarder off Fountainstown Beach this evening when suddenly a ship sailed into the viewfinder.

It’s the LÉ Samuel Beckett sailing into Cork Harbour at a quick pace. She crossed the distance visible from the beach quickly but I’m glad I got a few photos of her!

Temple Hall

Temple Hall, or Telamon as it was known when it ran aground in Lanzarote in 1981.

“That Saturday October 31, 1981 a strong storm lashed the Canary Islands. It would not be a quiet day in the small port of Los Mármoles, Lanzarote. A freighter called the port to request permission for emergency assistance as they had suffered a serious leak, they were travelling from Abidjan and San Pedro from the Gulf of Guinea and carried a large shipment of huge wooden logs on route to the Greek port of Thessaloniki in the Aegean Sea.

It was easy to comprehend the damage sustained to the ship, a simple look and it was realised that the ships gravity was not sufficient to make the dock, there was a possibility of it sinking into the inner harbour which would render the port useless. The forecast was still heavy seas for the following day.”

Queen Elizabeth 2 in Cobh

Queen Elizabeth 2 in Cobh

The QE2 docked in Cobh last Thursday. This was shot at the bottom of steps down to the water where seaweed made footing precarious. I saw a few people venture down the steps but none went further than half way down. The tide was well out so I was maybe 3m below the quayside, standing in wet and slippery seaweed. The risks I take to get a photo!

Oh yeah, there’s already something gone bust in my new Canon 40D. The pop up flash refuses to pop up unless I prise it open with a fingernail. It tries a few times, gives up and issues an Error 99 and needs to be switched off and on. The same happened to my Canon 20D, but I’m surprised the 40D didn’t last a bit longer ..

The Moonlit Shipyards

The shipyards in Rushbrooke, just outside Cobh are still active although much quieter now than during their heyday. The cranes make for great photography against the moonlit sky.

This was shot from across the River Lee in Passage last November.

FRLinux asked about settings so here they are, including post-processing:

Flickr’s exif data for this is a bit wrong – gthumb says the exposure was for 5 seconds, aperture was wide open at f4.5, and lens set at 28mm, which you can probably multiply by 1.6 for the crop factor. ISO was 100.

Post Processing was done in the GIMP using 3 layers:
1. Top layer is transparent with a black gradient at the bottom. Layer mode is Overlay.
2. Middle layer is black and white, and blurred and with added noise. It’s set to screen mode, and opacity of 51%.
3. Bottom layer is the colour image, slightly saturated and darker.

Hope that helps!
