The Golden Shades of Autumn
Shades of gold and brown were everywhere in November. This shot in Fitzgerald Park, Cork captured the wonderful display while kids and parents congregated around the playground.

Equal to the Ferris Wheel
A few days ago I had a chance to shoot the city and took the opportunity to get a higher vantage point to shoot the Ferris wheel on The Grand Parade.
I’ve decided to license this photo and any newer photos under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. This basically means you can do whatever you like with this photo, even commercial usage (although opportunities might be limited because of the web size of the file) as long as you credit me as the author and share the (altered?) photo under the same license.
You could if you were so inclined add little stick figures dangling from the gondolas in this photo, with one plummeting to it’s death while the others are rescued by their friends or a passing eagle. I’d be fine with that. I’d be very happy with that! Just remember to mention me and link back here. That’s all I ask.
Fire Dancers in Santa Cruz
One from a few months back. Automattic held their annual grand meetup in California this year and we split our time between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. On our final night in Santa Cruz there was a small party for everyone and fire dancers appeared to entertain us. I was across the poll from them and guessed a long exposure might work better than an instant of time frozen by a brazen flash in the dark!
Sailing past the Baltimore Beacon
On our way back to Baltimore after a nice visit to Cape Clear Island the ferry passed by the Baltimnore Beacon.
I heard that the Beacon had been built by the father of a man who perished on the cliffs where it’s built but it’s origin is rather more mundane. The British Government ordered it built in the mid 1900’s. However I did know it was known as “Lott’s Wife” or the “Pillar of Salt” locally.

Martin O’Brien of The Old Grainstore
Martin O’Brien who runs The Old Grainstore at St. Mullin’s, Co Carlow posed for a photo after we chatted with him outside his café. It was a glorious day and the place was busy with people eating lunch, swimming and walking about. It’s a beautiful location I want to return to again.
Public Display of Affection
St Patrick’s Street, Cork during the Street Performance World Championships yesterday. Does anyone know who this performer is?
I can’t really comment on any of the performers unfortunately as I was only there for an hour with a bored six year old who had a fixation on buying an Angry Birds hat and balloon animals. There were huge crowds too which meant kids had to at the performance before it started to get a place in front.
I’m glad I caught this moment.
Family Fun Day in Blarney
Today was Family Fun Day in Blarney oraganised by Gaelscoil Mhuscrai. It threatened to rain several times but besides a few drops it stayed dry and everyone had fun!

A trip into town is always complicated when you have kids with you. Shot on Emmett Place, Cork last weekend.
Together Forever
Graffiti on a St Patrick Street, Cork. A couple embraces and kisses forever lost in each other.
First time shooting on the street with the Canon 6D. I set up C1, one of the custom settings with the following:
1. Enable auto ISO and limit it to 100-128000.
2. Set the minimum shutter speed to 1/125.
3. Use medium RAW.
This should help me get sharp images, at the expense of more noise. It helped sometimes but at other times shooting from the hip was too much and the swing of my arm didn’t help matters. I culled about half of the images I took and I’ll probably delete more as I go over them again tomorrow.
Hank Wedel and Friends in Charlies Pub Cork
Way back in 2009 we went to see Hank Wedel and other musicians play in Charlies Pub, Cork. It was a great night of music as far as I remember and it’s about time these photos see the light of day!

Braving the water at Garrettstown
The weather for the first 3 and a bit months of this year have been miserable. It’s been raining, and cold and windy and miserable. The sun has poked through the clouds for a few days at a time, or more usually in between rain showers it would brighten slightly before the clouds gathered for another onslaught.
So, even though there was a good possibility of rain and the forecast said there were 54km/h winds yesterday I decided we should go to the beach! Luckily it wasn’t freezing but the wind was almost enough to blow us off our feet and it whipped the sea up into a churning mess of white flecking waves and foam on the rocks. Sometimes I couldn’t even take a photo before the wind blew against my zoom lens so much it was hard to hold steady!
It didn’t stop others either. There were well over 20 cars down there, most people sitting in their vehicles watching and listening to the wind howl. Some braved the waves.
