The Grand Parade in 2003

I’ve recently taken a keener interest in older photos of Cork but the realisation that I have photos in my own archive that are “sort-of old” has dawned slowly on me.

Here’s a shot of The Grand Parade in Cork shot in 2003. The street looks completely different now of course. The street isn’t split in two, there aren’t cars parked in the middle of the street like that any more, and there’s a huge pedestrian area where that bus stop used to be. The bus stop is in fact about 10m or more over to the left.

In the foreground is the cannon I have posted here a few times. You can see in that picture some of the changes that make the modern street a more friendly place to pedestrians.

A Cold Sunrise

Last night was the coldest yet this winter. It’s been amazingly mild so far but this morning cars were encased in a thick frost, the lock on my car was frozen solid and the thermometer in my car said -2C. Lovely sunrise however. Brrrrr.

The Cat Yawns

Zara yawns as she ponders the meaning of life. No. She just wants to know when her next meal will be.

This was taken just over 10 years ago when Zara was but a kitten, she’s a little bigger now! I shot this with my ancient Sony F717, my favourite camera of all time. It’s “only” 5MP, and horrendous at night but it had a cool infra red mode and I loved how the body of the camera swivelled around the lens. Unfortunately the motherboard in it failed prompting me to jump ship to a Canon DSLR!

House on Lower Glanmire Road, Cork

A derelict house on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork as it existed in 2004, almost ten years ago. Now there’s a bridge across the road nearby obscuring this view and the house is boarded up.

Blarney Castle in the Sun

I walked around Blarney Castle this morning. It was around 2C and it felt it when I was in the shade but the rising sun was glorious and warmed the Castle in a lovely way.

Horse Trough in Parnell Place

It’s been many years since horses have drunk from this trough in Parnell Place, Cork but it’s great this old street furniture is still here. There’s a similar one on Alfred Street, in front of Mc Loughlin’s.

An Autumn Ladybird

Winter is almost upon us and we’ve had plenty of cold days so my son was amazed when he saw a ladybird on a wall yesterday! I can’t imagine how it survived but maybe he had a secret hideout with a roaring fire going in the hearth and comfy chairs and lots of cups of hot chocolate. Yeah, he did. And he’s back there now supping on a delicious beverage. Enjoy, little guy.

Sunset over Cork City

The sun sets over Cork City as seen from Mayfield yesterday evening. Love the colour of the sun shining on the underside of the cloud!

Sunlight on the River

Have you ever read Terry Pratchett’s description of the dawn light as it flows over Discworld? Not so much flows, but rather sluggishly crawls over the landscape. Loved that and that’s what comes to mind sometimes when I see photos like this.

River Martin in the Morning

The River Martin flows through Blarney village and into the grounds of Blarney Castle. This photo was made moments before the sunlight trees one I posted a few days ago. Beautiful morning, and there’s one more photo to come! 🙂

Sunlight through trees

It was another foggy morning in Blarney but not as bad as the last one. This time I had my camera with me and walked up to Blarney Castle where I got some nice shots of the trees, fog and river. I loved the sight of the morning sunlight streaming through the trees and fog. It was a gorgeous, crisp morning for a walk.
