Mad about Cork Derilicition

Mad about Cork Derilicition

In the midst of a housing crisis and buildings up and down the country are left empty and rotting away.

Follow Frank O’Connor and Jude Sharry on Twitter. The Derelict Ireland hashtag is full of photos of crumbling or boarded up buildings all over the country.

Meanwhile, people live, 6 to a tiny room, in Dublin because that’s all they can afford. There’s something really twisted and greedy about Ireland.

One of my Brazilian friends lives in a one bedroom apartment with 5 other Brazilian girls paying 400 euro each…. That’s above what the landlord would get if they just rented it to a couple, I don’t understand how it’s legal. They have bunk beds in a tiny room. It’s inhumane.

Sean O Connors Dental Laboratory

I never noticed this sign for a dental laboratory on Castle Street before. Maybe it’s the large gaping hole in the streetscape next to it that caught my eye? It must be a really old sign, that phone number had a “4” prefix added to it many years ago.

Castle Street in Ruins

Castle Street in Ruins

A building on Castle Street in Cork City collapsed yesterday crushing a parked car but thankfully not hurting anyone. This is the scene earlier today where the building has been demolished and in the process of being cleared up. As I left, a truck reversed into the street, presumably to take rubble away.

The crushed car is in the foreground and according to a man I met at the scene belongs to a local business man (and still had a year on it’s NCT, don’t think it’ll pass the next one!)

Denis Murphy, Castle Street

There’s something fascinating for me about old buildings. Perhaps it’s the history they have seen and the memories they hold. Some of the old buildings on Castle Street, Cork are really interesting. I noticed this small building nestled in between it’s larger brethern and when I saw some people walking by I took my shot.

It was processed afterwards with the gimp Wide Angle plugin and I did a little work changing colours but not much else.

I like this: downtown strips, simply because it’s a neat idea I haven’t seen anyone else do yet.

Ladder to nowhere

Castle Street, Cork on Saturday. Workmen went off to lunch and left their ladder.
Thanks for the positive feedback yesterday. It was great to see so much interest in a photo!
