Kerry’s Quiet Corner

The bench here at the end of a spit of land near Kenmare, Co Kerry has a plaque that says:

HE NEVER LOOKS FOR PRAISES

HE WAS NEVER ONE TO BOAST

HE JUST GOES ON QUIETLY WORKING

FOR THOSE HE LOVES THE MOST

OUR DAD

The pillar has a plaque that has some writing I forgot to photograph, but the heading says, “Ode to Lem” which may be this song.

A lovely spot to contemplate the world.

Have a seat on the bridge

In Valencia, Spain, they rerouted a river that ran through the city, making a very long park through the city. The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, the science museum, is behind me, nestled in the space the river once took, while in front is the Pont l’Assut de l’Or. It’s a beautiful bridge spanning the gap over the old river.

In the background is the Caixa Forum, and further on, out of view is the Museu Oceanogràfic, the fabulous aquarium in the city.

All along the old river run paths and play fields, grassy areas, trees, and benches for sitting on. It’s a wonderful place to visit if you’re in the city. Bikes can be hired too, but I found it stressful because there were so many people around. Getting the bus is easier.

The photo above was shot before sunrise, when the only people around were joggers and people working in the local area. Lovely and quiet!

Unfortunately, there’s a bin at the end of every bench. Not much I could do about it. I wanted to remove it in Photoshop, but I appear to have this bug where no tools work. Uninstalling and reinstalling did not help. 🙁

Flooding in Fitzgerald Park

Fitzgerald Park in Cork City is a bit flooded after the recent rain. The children’s play area is totally flooded, as it’s lower than the surrounding ground, and the pond is overflowing onto the surrounding path.

They were waiting for the River Lee to overflow about an hour later!

Dick Copithorne

The late Dick Copithorne was Belgooly Athletic club president until his sudden death in 2003 and just outside the village is a public bench with this plague on it in his memory.

December 20th: Christmas Road Races
…. On Sunday (St Stephens Day) the Belgooly 4 mile Road Race will be held. This is a very popular road race, always attracting a big crowd including many American based athletes home for Christmas. Last year the race winners were Martin McCarthy and Carmel Parnell of Leevale but last years sadly will be remembered for the sudden death of Belgooly Athletic club president Dick Copithorne while watching the finish of the race. His family are sponsoring the race this year and part of the entry fee will go to Bowel Cancer Research in the CUH. Race headquarters are in Belgooly GAA and the race starts at 12pm.

January 10th – Belgooly 4 Prize Giving
Presentations of Prizes for the Belgooly 4 held on Dec 26th 2003 will take place in the Viaduct Inn, Bishopstown at 8pm on Wednesday, January 14th. Prizegiving on the day of the race had to postponed due to the sudden death of Belgooly club president Dick Copithorne. ….

The local club even runs a memorial race each year. What a wonderful way to remember a man obviously loved by his local community.

Stuck on you

A wet bench in Maidenhead is no place for you or I but an Autumn leaf has made it home.

Bench and Wheel

A decorative bench and wheel on the ranch in Arizona. I took so many shots of the place I’m still struggling to catch up and mark the ones I want to work on but I will eventually get to them. I suspect some may not see the light of day until next year though!

Fitzgerald’s Park Bench

A park bench in the lovely and picturesque Fitzgerald’s Park, Cork.

Something awful happened. I went away with my family on a great weekend break on Friday and in the rush and stress I forgot to post some photos for the weekend. I’m catching up!

Late Autumn Leaves

The browns and yellows of Autumn grow darker as the rain soaks in and leaves disintegrate on the ground. A bench stands tall in the distance at Doneraile Park, Co. Cork.
