Sullivan’s Quay sold!

The old Christian Brother’s school on Sullivan’s Quay was put up for auction and sold recently. It’s in a prime city centre location but is also a very old building.

My brother attended there briefly when the Model School transferred from Anglesea St near the end of it’s life.

Interesting bits: School Days at ‘The Quay’ and a photo from John Wallace.

Tomorrow, a picture looking in.

Beat my WordPress cache

If I may be so bold as to break from the regular programming of photography stuff here, you may know I’m also a WordPress.com developer and heading up development of WordPress MU. Yes, I wear lots of hats.

Yesterday I released a new WordPress plugin called, WP Super Cache. It’s pretty super as it’s name implies and should protect WordPress sites from large spikes in traffic. I need your help to test that out.

You may be familiar with a site called Digg.com, if you have an account there, please digg my plugin. It’s only going to take another couple of diggs to get it on to the front page of the site, but it has to get there within the next few hours. If it does, that will quite possibly cause a huge spike in traffic to that post, and with any luck the server my blog is on won’t keel over and die. Don’t worry, inphotos.org is on a different machine. 🙂

Update – it’s one the front page of digg.com! Thanks everyone who voted for it! Apparently this is a light digging though, and my server barely notices the extra requests.

School children

While walking back to the car after the Cobh Rambler’s game a few weeks ago I made this picture of a sign on the road.

I find it strange that out of the 600-odd images I took that day, this is the first image I’ve uploaded..

Daffodils in the sky

Lovely bright daffodils to brighten up your gloomy November Monday morning!

This was taken way back on March 18th this year on the same day I shot these daffodils! The image has been sitting in my WIP folder for months but after my gimp lomo post I decided to post this in a larger format.

Post processing: Auto-levels, gimp lomo and save. Resized version has been sharpened and I could have done more with the dodge and burn tool to bring out the detail in the flowers but this will have to do.

Grand Parade in the shade

The buildings of the Grand Parade in Cork face away from the setting sung on a cold February afternoon earlier this year. Cork bathes in the frosty sunlight.

This image was of course made of two images, one for the sky and one for the city. It was handheld and shot using the bracketing function (AEB) on the Canon 20D. The image isn’t perfect. My hand moved between frames but it’s only noticeable at the horizon if you look carefully.

Cassettes

I wonder if the teenager wearing this hoodie realised the irony of wearing a garment decorated with cassette images, a piece of technology he may not ever have used. The Wikipedia page has a lot more to say on the subject.

This was shot outside Brown Thomas on Patrick Street, Cork while I wheeled Adam around in his buggy.

Ooops, someone noticed the Technorati rank

Justin added this site to his Technorati list of Irish blogs and was a little shocked at what he saw. Damien noticed too 🙂

Actually, I don’t get many hits from blogs despite the inflated numbers on that list. It seems nobody is curious to know who that “Donncha” chap is. In the latest release of WordPress, all those links were replaced by links to the Codex and other WordPress related sites.

A girl’s bag

Two girls stop to talk on Patrick’s Street, Cork. That bag looks uncomfortable. What do women put in their bags?

Internet Cafe

The Internet Cafe is that way.

Sign is on The South Mall in Cork.

PS. GIMP 2.4.1 was released yesterday. It’s a bugfix release!

Waves at Couminole

The waves crash on to the beach at Couminole on Slea Head, Co. Kerry.

Standing where I was when I took this image was scary. Huge waves lifting up water to head height before crashing down mere feet in front of me.

Is that Skellig Michael in the background?

The Kerry Flag

Kerry were still celebrating their win in the All Ireland when we stayed in Dingle a few weeks back and flags were flying everywhere!

Shadows on Slea Head

Shadows from the broken clouds above play over the landscape on Slea Head in Co. Kerry. Every moment was a different photo until the rain eventually caught up with us!
