  • Mini & the pussy

An (ancient?) Mini, one of the older British design, not the new fangled BMW ones that are as big as a Yaris, and of course a pussy cat watching me carefully.

This was shot near Shandon Bells after we braved the heights of the tower to shoot the City of Cork. Now take your minds out of the gutter. 🙂

I really must upload some of that day’s shoots to Pixie!

  • Yellow Pipes

When you’re stuck for time state the obvious. Yellow piping found on a back road beyond Crosshaven in Co Cork 9 days ago. That pink bike at the end of the frame was a nice bonus. Hadn’t noticed that when I took the photo!

Pancakes have been cooked, flipped and eaten by all and we’re heading out to see that Barcelona film that I can’t remember the name of in the Kino in Cork. Babysitter is here, Adam is tucked up in bed, time to run out the door.

  • Shandon Bells

The clock tower of St. Anne’s Church in Shandon is more well known as “Shandon Bells” after the bells that ring out there through out the day.

We were so lucky with the weather on Saturday on our little photowalk. Wasn’t it Aidan‘s idea to head up to Shandon? Inspired! Everyone had a great time. Next photowalk we’re heading up there again!

  • North Cathedral, Cork

The Cathedral of St. Mary & St. Anne, or the North Cathedral as it’s known in Cork sits right in the middle of this photo. It’s the city’s Catholic cathedral. A large portion of the north side of Cork City surrounds it. Blackpool is immediately behind it, and you can see the Heineken Brewery on the right where Murphy’s Stout and soon Beamish will be brewed.

This shot was taken yesterday from the tower of St. Anne’s Church, or “Shandon Bells”. You can see the huge shadow it casts on the green park and nearby houses! I will post photos from the Irish Blog Awards tomorrow. I’ve hardly had time to sit down today.

  • Bird’s Eye View

Bird’s eye view from the top of Shandon Bells on the north side of Cork City. If you look carefully you’ll see a few photobloggers sitting on the steps of the church. Scary taking this photo. I held the camera over empty space while holding the strap! See you all later at the Irish Blog Awards!

PS. Congrats to Ryan for winning Best Photoblog tonight at the Irish Blog Awards. Well deserved! (Thanks Pix.ie for sponsoring that section!)

  • Baltimore Harbour

A small boat sits in Baltimore Harbour in Co Cork. Taken last September from the pier where the ferry for Cape Clear lands.

If you’re in Cork tomorrow, there’s a pre-Blog Awards photowalk at noon. Everyone’s meeting at The Old Oak on Oliver Plunkett Street. See you there and at the Blog Awards tomorrow night!

  • Eccles Hotel

Eccles Hotel on the outskirts of Glengarriff in Co Cork is an imposing hotel from the outside. I never went in so I don’t know what it’s like inside. My wife Jacinta checked out the menu while I stayed in the car with the baby and got the camera out of course!

It’s a beautiful building, in nice surroundings. Water laps against the road behind me as far as I remember and it’s very peaceful (in the off season, I’m sure the carpark is full in the summer!)

PS. Just wanted to point out Fake Chuck Westfall. A blog satirising a senior Canon exec. Canon didn’t like it and tried to have it taken down. Thankfully they didn’t succeed. My boss Toni Schneider responded to Canon’s request and you can see the response above.
In fact Fake Chuck got a HUGE traffic boost from all the attention. Should have just ignored it!

Steps to a church in Castletownbere, Co Cork.

I tried finding out more about this church but any attempt to find info on it returns this church I blogged a while back. Anyone know it’s name?

  • Photo Frame with Copyright Message in the GIMP

It’s about time I released this script. I announced last December I had written a script for the GIMP to create the border and copyright message seen on my photos here.

Previously I used a 704×490 empty image with the border and message (and a similar image for portrait shots). That was fine for uncropped images but if the width by height ratio was different I had to edit the frame and resize bits. Took ages.

This script creates a thin black border around the image, then adds a white border at the bottom. Finally the copyright text and url are printed in the white border.
Border and text sizes are hard coded but the script will work for any size image. Currently they’re more suitable for the web size images uploaded here.

Looking for the script? Download copyright-frame.scm and copy into .gimp-2.6/scripts/ and start GIMP. The script adds a menu item at “Image->Filters/Decor/Copyright Photo Frame…” The script is based on one written by Alexios Chouchoulas and distributed as part of the GIMP FX Foundary.

When you run the script the border and message is added without further interaction. A dialog to modify the hard coded size values isn’t really necessary because the images I upload are all around the same size. Clicking “OK” each time the script runs is hardly productive. If you want to modify the values, you’ll have to edit the script.
To change the size of the text, look for

    (TextLayer (car (gimp-text-fontname inImage -1 (- theWidth 230) (- theHeight 18) “Donncha O Caoimh, https://inphotos.org/” 0 TRUE 11 PIXELS “Sans”)))

230: the number of pixels from the right where the message starts.
18: pixels from the bottom of the image where the top of the message hits.
11: size of the font used for the message.
Change the copyright message to suit your own circumstances.

To change the size of the white bottom border, look for the code (+ theHeight 23) and change 23.

If you use this script please link back here. I’d love to see what’s done with it!

  • Piper’s Funfair Crosshaven

A bright and colourful poster advertises Piper’s Funfair in Crosshaven!

In other news, this blog is a finalist in the Irish Blog Awards on Saturday next in the Cork International Airport Hotel. Here are all the finalists. I’m honoured to make it this far as some amazing photoblogs were nominated.

Best Photo Blog – Sponsored by Pix.ie

Thank you Pix.ie for sponsoring the photoblog competition!

PS. Red Mum is organising a photowalk in Cork to coincide with the Blog Awards. Kick off is at noon in the city somewhere. No venue decided yet but perhaps we should meet in a pub? The Old Oak anyone?
