Alcatraz Control Center
Alcatraz Control Center The Control Center in Alcatraz. This room is visible to all visitors to the prison and is beautifully preserved. I couldn’t find anything specific about this room but Alcatraz History has a very good site with lots of information about the prison on Alcatraz Island.
A view on an Alcatraz Street
A view on an Alcatraz Street Looking through a doorway onto one of the streets of Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco. Tourists congregate while listening to the electronic tour guide. I think I should have all my photos of Alcatraz and San Francisco posted before my next trip there in July.
Many faces in the crowd
Many faces in the crowd A crowd of Alcatraz sightseers prepares to disembark from the ferry back at San Francisco. From the expressions on a few faces I think they were wondering what that guy was doing with his camera held in the air! I love the patterns in the roof and the contrast with…
Alcatraz Staircase
Alcatraz Staircase A lonely staircase on Alcatraz is off-limtis to tourists but not to the eye of my camera.
Sailing In San Francisco
Sailing In San Francisco A yacht sails past the waterfront in San Francisco Bay. There was plenty of activity on the waters with ferries, yachts, kite surfers and even helicopters fly overhead.
Corrugated Prison Roof
Corrugated Prison Roof Visitors to Alcatraz Island walk about on the broad path up to the main prison building. Some of the buildings on the island are in a bad state of repair, lacking everything but the brick walls that stand like a whitewashed skeletons. This building is about halfway up the hill and in…
Alcatraz Tower and Prison
Alcatraz Tower and Prison The prison tower and buildings of Alcatraz provide a stark welcome for visitors to the former penitentiary. Despite my close investigation, the tower in this picture was off limits. Pity, because I bet there’d be a great view from up there!
The gull and the flag
The gull and the flag Two teenagers watch a seagull on the way back from Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The US flag flutters in the same breeze that keeps the gull aloft, who no doubt is hoping for food from the boat full of tourists. I’m going to be shooting at a fund raising…
Alcatraz Cell Painting
Alcatraz Cell Painting Could these be the paint and artwork of Doc, a character in the film Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood? This was only one of a number of cells with personal belongings in them.
Alcatraz 2E 53 45
Alcatraz 2E 53 45 A vintage 1940’s truck with the license plate number, “2E 53 45” sits under an archway on the Island of Alcatraz. It’s a beautifully restored vehicle that attracts the attention of all tourists as they walk past. Here’s a few more pictures of the truck but I’m surprised nobody has posted…
The Stars and Stripes on Alcatraz
The Stars and Stripes on Alcatraz The flag of the United States flies over Alcatraz Island on a windy August day. This was originally a portrait shot but I squared it off to emphasize the vertical and horizontal leading lines. The hydrant is much more prominent in the foreground too. The red rusty texture beloved…
Alcatraz Flowers
Alcatraz Flowers The entrance to Alcatraz Prison is up a series of steps near these flowers. I love how they catch the light while the background is in the shade of the prison. After yesterday’s flood of posts it’s nice to get back to the one-a-day habit although I wonder why Technorati hasn’t picked up…
