A tree in the grounds of Blarney Castle.

Yesterday morning there was a glorious sunrise, this morning it was horrible. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Tullagh Cemetery at Sunset

Tullagh Cemetery at Sunset

Tullagh Cemetery in Baltimore, Co Cork, Ireland is just a field away from the excellent Casey’s Hotel where we spent the last week. I went down there one evening to shoot a couple of half capsized trawlers in the bay when I turned around and saw some of the headstones silhouetted against the setting sun.

I went searching online and found that 3 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war were in this graveyard.

How to (not) shoot a solar eclipse

solar eclipse

I went searching and found a few pages describing how to shoot the sun during a solar eclipse. All warned against looking at the sun directly.

So, I ignored all that advice and got out my 75-300mm lens and grabbed a couple of shots of the sun with a chunk bitten out of it by the moon. Thankfully the clouds provided a bit of a filter but my eyes are still watering a bit. Worth it?

With hindsight, what the hell was I thinking? I’m lucky my eye is fine, but if you’re going to shoot a solar eclipse, don’t look through the viewfinder. Set your camera up on a tripod and project an image of the sun on a white sheet of cardboard and then press the shutter button. Much safer than actually looking..

Misty Morning Bird

Misty Morning Bird

What were you doing at 5:52am this bright Sunday morning? Fast asleep? Our little boy Adam had us up and about bright and early. Bleary eyed parents who read this will I’m sure agree that it’s a shame young kids don’t realise the weekend is for sleeping in.

I would have missed this shot though so I’m thankful he was up this early. The fog is gone now, burned off by the early morning sun, I’ve already been out with both Adam and Oscar and brought home a couple of good photos. I’m a bit tired now, more then 3 hours later at 9.30am as I write this. Adam is asleep and I’m going for a nap shortly. zzzzz.

House on the hill

A house with a striking red door overlooks a field with sheep in one corner and a feeding trough in the foreground. This was shot near Bantry in West Cork a few months ago and I just love the vast rolling grassy slope of the ground.

Cork City Marathon is on Monday. It starts at 9am in Patrick’s Street. I’m going to try and get in there for that time. I’ll be up anyway since 6am so hopefully I’ll have some shots to share next week!

Great ball of flame

Great ball of flame

Sunrise over Blarney a few days ago. There was a thin layer of cloud on the horizon that nicely blocked out much of the light of the sun allowing me to capture this early morning sun.

It’s amazing to think that the light we see takes 8 minutes to travel the immense distance between the Sun and Earth. What’s even more remarkable is the thousands of years a photon can spend zinging back and forth inside the Sun before emerging as heat and light.

You can see Cobh Cathedral in the background, and I’d swear the boats in the foreground are still there in the same position all these years later ..

Call of the evening

A bird atop the light outside my house calls into the glowing evening sky heralding the end of 2007.

After walking Oscar I had to grab my camera and shoot the beautiful evening sky. The background was this colour, there’s no trickery here except a little vignetting and sharpening.

We walked around The Lough and wandered over to the daffodils growing by the footpath at one of the lake. That’s Sean Murphy in the background as he preps some of his equipment to take a shot.

Donkey eyes staring at me

The donkey knows everything. He stands in his field every day contemplating life.

This is the same donkey I posted before in Baile na nGall, Co. Kerry. We passed that way last September and I didn’t see him so if you see a wandering donkey, tell him I said hi!
