How do you shoot a self portrait?
- Find the nearest Christmas tree.
- Look for a nice reflective ball.
- Shoot!

Footsteps in the sand speak of many people passing this way.
Shot at Garrettstown Beach in October 2006. A very different shot to my previous Footprints in the sand.
Remember a few weeks ago I explained how I backed up my photos? Good thing I have backups as my first external drive has possibly died. It wouldn’t mount at first, and the drive kept making “spinning up” sounds but it has finally been recognised by Linux. Unfortunately attempts to get even a directory listing result in input/output errors. I’m doing an fsck of it but I’ll probably be buying another drive tomorrow!
Everything is backed up. There’s 411GB, or 8 years of photos on there, and lots of family videos I’d hate to lose. Thankfully they’re safe.

Marina City, the round shaped buildings in Chicago that sit on the river make an imposing sight when viewed up close. Good thing there’s valet parking, you certainly wouldn’t want to be scared of heights driving around inside them!

If you live anywhere north of London it seems you’re in the flight path of one airport or another. Windsor, despite having a great big castle, is no exception and a number of flights flew over in the few hours we spent in the town.

Continuing on the Burnham Beeches theme, here’s another typical autumn shot. A great many more trees had their leaves than here in Blarney where most trees are naked.
While in town this evening I discovered to my dismay that my Canon 10-22 lens is broken. The manual focus ring is completely jammed and the zoom ring can be moved with effort. I noticed the lens is slightly bend at the focus ring where it looks like some of the ring is more visible. All the more reason to ring Canon in the UK. The Canon 20D and now this lens have to be fixed.
PS. check out this comment from Dumb. Cracked me up, and gave several people on Twitter a chuckle too. Thank Dumb!

Terminal 1 at Heathrow, just before we parked. Thanks Matt and Mary for a great few days!
Matt bought himself a shiny new Sony A200 on Saturday. It has built in image stabilisation that really helped when I took some shots inside a pub in Eton. If you’re on the look out for a very reasonably priced entry level DSLR I can recommend the Sony A200.

Lifeboats are dotted around the The Queen Elizabeth 2. They’re high up above some of the lower decks as far as I can remember and there are plenty of them. Hopefully won’t ever be needed.

On Friday morning around 5am the Gardai on duty at Blarney Garda Station were called away on what turned out to be a hoax. Unfortunately while they were out the Garda station was attacked, the front door kicked down and firebombs thrown into the rooms downstairs. The building itself is quite old and burned quickly. Luckily the blaze was seen by a security guard from a nearby hotel or much more damage could have been done.
The building is unusable now of course. A Garda has been posted outside since, and this afternoon forensics were examining the site.
