Biosphere 2

Biosphere 2 lies in the dusty hot desert in Arizona. It was originally designed as a self contained “world” where scientists stayed for an extended period of time. After going through the tour, there’s no way I’d volunteer to spend my time inside. It must have been very difficult being cooped up in one building. The Wikipedia page on the project has a lot more detail about what went on there.

Anyway, the building is very striking to look at, especially as the day was fine and interesting clouds added to the scene.

Rushing through countryside

I shot this through the window of our car while driving back to the ranch after Automattic’s trip to Biosphere 2 in Arizona a few months ago. I love how the foreground blurs but the background and the sky remain motionless and static. Love the movement.

No. 2400

At Biosphere 2 in Arizona the land around the main building was sold to developers to fund the experiment and for maintenance. Unfortunately all the houses there looked very empty, but maybe that was because it was in January and in the off season.

Fire!

Fire burns brightly in a bonfire lit at the ranch in Arizona. I ruined my coat by standing downwind of the fire. The smell of smoke was impossible to get out! Still, got a few nice shots!

Wind Chimes

Wind chimes swayed gently in the almost breeze at the ranch in Arizona. Actually, I’m not sure if they’re wind chimes or bells but I suppose there’s not much difference.

How very phallic of you

A desert plant growing near the ranch we stayed at in Arizona.

I only thought of the title after seeing this image in b/w, but err, it suits doesn’t it?

Desert Tree

One of the many trees growing in the arid desert surrounding the ranch Automattic stayed in while in Arizona.

Clouds over the Conor Pass

I’m loath to post photos from the same location day after day but I may as well call this “Conor Pass Week” and get the rest of them out of the dark where they’ve languished since 2006.

After the reaction to yesterday’s Conor Pass photo hopefully you’ll like this one too.

I have another 2 or 3 taken at the same time. The day was perfect for photography, the light was strong and to the side, there was an interesting sky and of course the scenery is beautiful. That was a very successful trip!

The City of San Francisco

San Francisco as seen from the hills surrounding the City. I took this back in August 2006.

Can you tell yet that I merged a few of my work directories after doing some house keeping work on my photo archive?

Thanks to Niall Kennedy for driving us up there!

Big brother is watching you

Big brother is watching you, wherever you go! CC TV cameras are sprouting up everywhere.

This one is just outside the AIB in Blarney. I happened to go to the AIB in Blackpool and counted at least 3 cameras near the entrance.

Turquoise Acid

A water main on the street in San Francisco while Automattic waited to go into a restaurant.

I think that’s Matt in the background, but it might have been Alex too.

Urban Acid applied to this image 🙂

Cut the chocolate birthday cake

Yum! Yum! Alex cuts the delicious chocolate birthday cake in Herbivore, San Francisco! That crazy Matt Mullenweg fella can’t resist helping him with the cake. Come to think of it, did anyone not eat the cake? It was so nice!
