Last of the News Stands

·

I was surprised to see a news stand on O’Connell Street. It was just outside Eason’s too, where they sell newspapers and magazines as well.

What caught my eye first was the news stand, but then the man extending his arm with his phone to pay for his purchase. A new form of payment for an old form of news.

Dublin is great for street photography. So many opportunities for moments.

Yeah, even in Cork we don’t have that, apart from the good old Echo guy 😁

@donncha I think there's still another one across the street from Easons, too.

@dec23k ah, maybe. It wasn't operating yesterday though. I was surprised that the people selling rubbish to tourists on the bridge weren't there either. They've always been there, but maybe it's because I'm usually in Dublin at the weekend.

@donncha It shows how long it’s been since I lived and worked in Dublin. I remember a man with his newspaper barrow/stand on the corner of O’Connell St near Easons, shouting ‘Herald or Press’; and you paid with Irish decimal money [before Punts, and waaaay before Euro]

@HarriettMB @donncha There were lots of offical street vendors in D1 and D2, each with their own slightly different call.Including at least one woman."Press oh Herald, Herald oh Press!"

@HarriettMB I must have some photos of this news stand then. No way would I walk past and not get a couple of photos in the past!

@dec23k @donncha I can still hear his voice inside my head, after all these years.

@donncha The one upthread is closer to Penneys (formerly BHS), next door to Easons. The one across the street is outside a PTSB branch. It's bigger, with a red Newsweek awning.

@HarriettMB @donncha I used to buy my favourite comic book from one of those stalls every week, paying in Earth money.
