In August 2022 the gable at the corner of Sullivan’s Quay and Drinan Street carried Joe Caslin’s portrait of Salamah, a woman seeking asylum in Ireland, with two huge hands held over her head like a roof. It was part of A Story of Home, a Cork Midsummer Festival project made with the Cork Migrant Centre. While I stood there a woman in a pink hijab pushed a buggy across the road in front of it.
Through a series of creative sessions at the Glucksman, Mr Caslin worked with a group of 35 women from diverse backgrounds to explore their understanding of home.
The participants were given the opportunity to share their experiences, finding connections with other members of the group and exploring creative ways that their stories could be represented.
The artwork was displayed until September when Kitsune Jolene’s Danu was painted there. In the last few days that mural has been painted over, so hopefully a new one will take its place.
