The Western Star in Cork was a favourite haunt of UCC students for many a year but now it looks like it’ll be demolished! Looks like development has been on the cards for quite a while:

‘Starries’ was great in the early 90s – back when the Beer Garden was available for all of us Autumnals. When they made the marquee permanent the rot set in, a process accelerated when they redecorated the place like some ersatz farm shed.
Still though, I’ll be sad to see it go – more of a reflection on the modern business ethic of the sad sacks currently making up the numbers in UCC.
My grandfather drank there in 1908 and derailed his QCC MD degree…
My grandmother’s parents Denis and Bridget Murphy used to own the pub back then. Just wondering if you know what happened to the family as their daughter, also Bridget married my grandfather but they left Cork in 1926.
Gerry – unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the family that ran the Western Star. Maybe someone who does know will Google their names and find this post in the future, and comment on it.
That’s such a shame. lovely stone building. The new ‘modern’ replacement will probably be an eyesore.
I love the red in the image, I imagine that in real life though it probably looks kinda tacky 🙂
Noooo! Not the Star, could they not have saved it?
Drove past there yesterday evening and the place has been demolished!
