    I wondered what that stood for. I even searched for "post office VR" and "post office HR" just in case I got the V wrong. Yes, ancient history.

    There’s a postbox on the South Mall in Cork from the same era I think.

    Ironically, I believe it’s an english post box. It dates from the time of enforced british rule in Ireland, hence the V and R on it – Victoria Regent.

    I think it stands for Very Red, which would have been it’s original colour.
