Dingle

The town of Dingle, or “An Daingean” as it’s officially known as now. The name change has upset many local people who mourn the loss of their identity and fear that the brand recognition of the name Dingle will be lost on (mostly American) tourists who flock here through out the summer.
The 2005 Placenames Order changed the name and it’s an utterly silly law. Yes the town is in an Gaeltacht, the Irish speaking part of the country. Yes, more people (hopefully?) speak Irish in those parts than in others, but a region does not survive on it’s own without interaction with non-Irish speaking people. I’m all in favour of An Gaeilge but this law is wrong.
Luckily, locals have stencilled the word “Dingle” back onto most signage but they missed a few signs here and there.

Thanks Harry! There probably isn’t enough detail in it but I might try it at the weekend.
Pete – sure is bigger. It sprawls along the coast to the left and right a bit more, but the town itself is quite compact. If I had gone wider you’d see even less detail on this reduce resolution web version. On the full size image I think I can pick out the church steeple in the middle of town if I look carefully!
Oh, this was taken right at the end of a 4 mile cul-de-sac. If you look out from Dingle you’ll see a hill with a small black tower on it. The farmer whose land that is on charges I think 12 Euro for adults to see it and has "Beware of the bull" notices on other gates into the field. I was going to take photos of them but we needed to get Adam home.

Pete – I think the colours are mostly because of the lens. I used the Canon f1.8 35mm lens. Colours were boosted afterwards but the image was quite saturated to begin with.
Very nice Donncha. I’m sure Dingle was bigger than that, but maybe that’s just my failing memory. I love the sky here (again!) Very serene.

The colouring reminds me of a John Hinde postcard. Are they still in production ?
John Hinde? I’m sure they are, but I know what you mean, the ones that look like they were taken in the 70’s and still selling?
Oh you’ve reminded me of one of my favourite places in the world. What a town, and it leads to such marvellous places, such as Slea Head. Thanks for the smile you’e put on my face today !
