Under the boardwalk? Well, not really but I couldn’t resist the title.

This is under the quay in Monkstown, Co Cork a few weeks ago.

Harry the Westi

Harry, a west highland terrier, ran through the waves at Dunworley Beach yesterday. We met his owners, John and Julie, on the beach and our dog Oscar and Harry had a great time playing together!

John and Julie are also run Dillon’s Restaurant in Timoleague. Hopefully next time we’re down that direction we can pop in there for a bite to eat!

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, Iceland. The water is lovely warm, even quite hot in places and is full of silica and sulphur. There’s usually a smell of bad eggs in the air from the sulphur but when we visited it was definitely bacon we smelled. Really weird. A great experience except when hailstone started to fall. Those things can really sting your ears and face. The rest of you will be safely and warmly under water.

Check out John’s great photo at the Lagoon too.

If you visit Iceland you have to visit here!

The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulphur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis.[1] The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37–39 °C (98–102 °F). (via)

PS. This was edited in Aftershot Pro as well. I used cloning layers to hide some blemishes, and an adjustment layer with and exposure of -1 to darken the sky. I figured out how to use the polygon tool in the layers menu to select only the sky and mask off the rest of the photo. I think it worked rather well!

Football on the beach

3 boys playing with a football on Garretstown Beach. The tide was coming in and I watched them kick the ball out into the water. The day was freezing though with a strong offshore wind. Brrrr.

Boats in Drake’s Pool

There are always boats moored in the section of the Owenabue River called “Drake’s Pool”. This was a shot I took last weekend while out walking with my family there. Quite frosty but many people out walking the light from the setting sun was amazing.

Yes, this location is associated with Sir Francis Drake:

The name reveals the linkage to Sir Frances Drake who in 1743 took refuge in these waters from the Napoleonic forces as they patrolled around Cork Harbour. His hiding place worked and he lived to fight another day. (source)

PS. The name Owenabue River fascinates me. I wonder if Owenabue is the English phonetic spelling of “Abhainn Bui”? That would be “Yellow River” in Irish. Where did that name come from?

River Nore, Kilkenny

River Nore, Kilkenny

The River Nore runs through the city of Kilkenny where we spent a weekend earlier this month at WordCamp Ireland. In the photo you can see the Rivercourt Hotel where I stayed with my family on the opposite bank the famous Kilkenny Castle.

Beautiful city, well worth a visit.

Reflections of a fence

That same fence again, this time against the setting sun and reflected in a pool of water from the recent rains. Loved taking this shot and others at the time, they turned out almost as good as I imagined they would!

My sister-in-law’s husband Ed has published a short story and is using one of my photos to illustrate it! Read Almost a Murder Story, the story of two boys living in the North Side of Cork City who planned a murder.

Springer at Fountainstown

Springer at Fountainstown

I always have a soft spot for Springer Spaniels. The beaches at Myrtleville and Fountainstown seem to be a favourite haunt of them if our experiences are anything to go by. Here’s a Springer that played with my son Adam at the beach in Fountainstown. They had a great time together!

Almost recovered. Stomach is still grumbling but the huge weakness I felt yesterday and this morning is gone. Relieved.

I thought I had posted this photo of waves crashing down at Couminole Beach before but no, I have posted several shots of waves at that exposed Atlantic beach but not this one!

I rarely mention WordPress stuff here but if you haven’t upgraded your site to 2.8.4, read this post by Matt. Please upgrade, you’ll be hacked otherwise!
