This bird, the American Bald Eagle, took my breath away when I saw it at the zoo. He looked so majestic and dignified, despite the fact that he was surrounded by bars in a large enclosure.
The shot is at the extreme end of the Canon 75-300mm zoom and it’s a little soft. I wish I could have retained more detail from the beautiful downy neck.
This bird is of course the national symbol of the United States.
Pictured in Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago.
I have a ton of photos to post from the St. Patrick’s Day Festival here in Cork. There are street performers and drama, markets and stalls and a rich mix of cultures present and it was a great experience.
The best news? It all happens again today if you missed it yesterday!
Great angle…really adds to the dignity and majesty you saw!

A little information on the Bald Eagle. It is the national symbol of the United States of America. All Bald Eagles in the U.S. are owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). It is against the law for an American to own a Bald Eagle. Native Americans (American Indians) are the only people in the United States who are exempt from this law because the Bald Eagle has been an important part of their traditions. This particular male Bald Eagle was placed at Lincoln Park Zoo by the USFWS because it was injured in the wild (Alaska) and could not be returned. When injuries to these magnificent birds are permanent the USFWS places them in zoos so they are properly cared for and we can educate people about the Bald Eagle. Many Americans would never have a chance to see a live Bald Eagle if is wasn’t for this cooperation between the USFWS and the American zoos. Liberty is his name.

Very impressed with your photos. We have two sets of nesting eagles on our little lake in northern Minnesota. They are so beautiful and majestic to watch. We are so fortunate to be blessed with their presence every day.
