Street Photography is like gambling

While browsing through the book, “Street Photography Now”, this quote leapt out of the page at me.

Street Photography is like gambling. You get lucky or you get nothing. Markus Hartel, Street Photographer

A fabulous book.

Culhan(e)

Culhane

Mannix and Culhane on Washington Street occupies a low single storey building on the corner with North Main Street. Did they lose the top floors of their building a few years ago? I remember a girl was killed just up the road when falling masonry from a neighbouring building fell on her.
I have a vague recollection that this building was found to be similarly weak but maybe I’m making it all up in my head.

Dominoes or Four Star Pizza?

Dominoes or Four Star Pizza

So, who’s for pizza? I’m quite partial to Dominoes Pizzas but to be honest I haven’t had a pizza from either establishment in quite a while. Odd that both premises are on Washington Street and almost directly across from each other. Makes “shopping around” easier, not that you’d be bothered. Pizza is horribly priced wherever you buy it.

I uploaded a few more shots to my gallery today. As I mentioned already, they’re running a 15% discount until the 27th so now would be a great time to buy a print if you’re interested. 🙂

Why does my Canon 20D keep clicking?

fuelling the passion for camogie

Bord Gais, fuelling the passion for Camogie in Cork. Or is it the wine? I couldn’t resist taking this shot this evening!

This is the second last photo I took with my Canon 20D before the shutter started clicking continuously. The last one is a slightly blurry shot of my family and inlaws in the pictured Wine Bar on Washington Street, Cork. I had just taken the shot, decided it was time to put the camera away and get Adam out of the buggy. I put the lens cap on, and click, click, click, click..
The clicks would only stop when I took the battery out. It appears from this thread that I’m not alone. I know that in the old days, cameras would last decades and “they don’t make them like they used to”, but I never expected the Canon 20D to break down on me in just 3 years. At a guess, I’ve probably shot 75,000 pictures with it so perhaps it was about time the shutter complained.

Anyway, I’m going to ring Canon in Dublin tomorrow for a repair quote. If it’s too expensive I’ll have to look into getting a replacement camera. Hope the house insurance will pay out in that case.

So many light trails

Light trails from passing cars fill the frame with a golden glow on the corner of The Grand Parade and Washington Street, Cork.

Long exposure shot made possible by the traffic light switch on which I rested my camera!

Never mind the bollocks

A Sex Pistols fan on his bike last April. This was taken on Washington Street, Cork while waiting for the street lights to change. I was walking, not in a car!

PS. Mallow Camera Club did really well yesterday at the SACC competition!

The club won the event outright and also took first place in each of the three sections, Colour Prints, Monochrome Prints, and Slides. In the individual category club members Morgan O’Neill and John Hooton won first prize in Colour Prints and Slides sections respectively.

Well done everyone! Sorry I couldn’t make it up for the day. In case you’re interested, here’s another reminder that Des Clinton will be talking at the club tonight.
