On the bike in Girona

What I saw of the old part of Girona is one long pedestrianised road like you see this photo. It’s a long straight part here but then winds around to the area of the Cathedral. I did see a small van drive down there but they were at least careful. Pedestrians were number 1.

Other parts are not so nice. A three lane street leads out of the city towards Barcelona.

My wife and I came across Korey Power singing on Patrick Street, in front of Brown Thomas. A small but enthusiastic crowd gathered to listen. He has a great voice!

Yes, a gentleman in the background was dancing and enjoying the music too. Did a fine job of it!

Waiting for the Train in Chicago

Many years ago, in August 2003, I was waiting for the L in Chicago to bring me to work.

Edit in 2024: I remembered this was Fullerton from the sign to the far right of the image, so I added it to Google Maps there. It looks like it’s the oldest photo for that station on there!

When did you last use a public phone?

The public phones at the top of St. Patrick’s Street Cork are in a sorry state. Eircom, the original national phone company in Ireland, haven’t been known publicly as Eircom since 2015 according to the Eir Wikipedia page.

They really should get rid of those eyesores.

Girona Cathedral

I should have done more research before visiting Girona. I would have found out it was used as a filming location for Game of Thrones. As it is, I walked up a cobbled street, rounded a bend, under an archway and saw the magnificent Cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona, before me.

The staircase is instantly recognisable if you have watched Game of Thrones, and according to that site I linked above, they used several locations around the old city.

Girona Cathedral

The view from the front of the Cathedral doesn’t quite match what viewers saw in Game of Thrones. The sea and a much bigger courtyard appear in the show.

The view from Girona Cathedral

Buildings surround the Cathedral, with shuttered rooms and small balconies.

I really want to come back some time. The old city is full of atmosphere and narrow streets.

Hurling in the sky

The mural of a hurler on Anglesea Street on a bright July afternoon. Always great to see this when I walk or drive past. The last time I photographed this mural was in the depths of winter last January!

ACHES did a great job on this one!
