Out of the rain

A young lady steps out of the rain on Tuckey Street, Cork last Saturday. What you don’t see in this shot is the large group of photographers behind me, sheltering under the awning outside Tribes. A torrential rain shower had just passed and thankfully was the last we saw.

Beauty Treatment at The Body Shop

I’m still recovering after the photowalk yesterday! I took a quick look through my photos this evening and decided I’m not over the moon about any of them. A couple are ok, but there’s that little critical part of my mind saying, “crap, crap, crap, blah, ‘s ok, focus is off, boring, what were you thinking?” as I look through them.

Anyway, here’s a shot from just before I met everyone else so I guess it can’t be counted really. Shame really as I have another shot of a gentleman getting a bus that I quite like in b/w.

Glad I had the wide angle lens on, caught this beauty treatment in front of The Body Shop on Patrick’s Street. Things are really desperate when shops are hawking their wares on the street trying to entice customers to buy. I saw a guy from Waterstones handing 3-for-2 leaflets outside Easons too. That’s smart. Target your competitor’s customers!

O’Briens Sandwich Bar

“O’Briens’ HQ placed in examinership” according to this news report yesterday. This is their fairly recently opened (and more recently closed) “sandwich bar” on Oliver Plunkett Street here in Cork.

Loved their Triple Decker, even if it was a little pricey. Hope the company survives.

Haircut, pint and hangover pills

So, start off in the College of Hairdressing to tighten up that stylish hair of yours, then off to the “Hi B” for a pint (but turn your mobile phone off!) and then downstairs to Minihan’s Pharmacy for the Alkazelser.

Actually, I don’t like the Hi B. Any pub owner who verbally attacks his customers is a pub I don’t want to frequent. Lovely people in the pharmacy though.

The Big Slide

In Fitzgerald’s Park a week ago the Street Performance World Championship 2009 brought the crowds to the park. This multi story slide was one of the main attractions. Huge long queue for it though.

Street Performance World Championship 2009

Some photos from last Sunday when the Street Performance World Championship was held in Fitzgerald’s Park, Cork. I actually didn’t really see any performers because of the huge crowds. The place was packed with people. No wonder, when we went down around 6pm it was a glorious evening!

Polish Coal

The coal industry here in Ireland has gone through a huge decline in the last 2 decade. In major urban areas only smokeless coal is allowed and even then many people have gas or oil central heating. The days of frequent smog warnings are a thing of the past thankfully.

Here in Blarney some will burn any old thing in their fireplaces. On cold still winter evenings the smell of smoke pervades the area and the only thing we can do is close our windows to keep it out. That’s one of the downsides of living outside the city.

Years ago Monahan Road was the center of coal distribution in Cork. Suttons and Sheehan & Sullivan’s were two of the major players. Suttons even occupied that big office block at the end of the Grand Parade. My Dad worked in that office for years and he took us in there a few times. Still remember those occasions!

I also remember the bags of Polish Coal out in the back of the house. It was described as “the best coal”, though I can’t say for sure why.

Sheehan & Sullivan’s is gone now. Last time I drove past there was an office block on the site I think. Suttons is still around but owned by Bord na Mona now, last I heard. They left the offices in South Mall a long time ago.

Funny the memories a bag of coal can drag up.

The O’Connell Monument

The O’Connell Monument in Ennis town is an impressive monument to Daniel O’Connell, a legend in Irish history.

THE O’CONNELL MONUMENT: This is an impressive Doric column erected on the site of the old courthouse where Daniel O’Connell was declared M.P. for Clare in 1828, an historic event which was later to result in the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act. The statue of the Liberator with a shamrock scroll around the base was executed by James Cahill of Dublin and is considered to be his finest work. (source)

Seconded by Tom Steele”. “Maid of Erin” – or Allen, Larkin, and O’Brien Monument. Inscription “Sacred to the memory of Allen, Larkin and O’Brien who suffered death in Manchester through love of their country. Their last prayer being God save Ireland”. (source)
