Juggling Knives in London

I love that this street entertainer is wearing such bright and distinctive clothes but I wish his knives were brightly coloured. Still, the reaction of (some) people was worth it even if the background is too busy to see the knives properly.

Knives. He’s juggling knives over the head of a tourist lying on the ground. That could have ended badly, but people who perform in Covent Square are really good.

Street performers must audition for their spots in Covent Square through a formal licensing system managed by the local authority. Performers are allocated specific time slots and locations, with the most desirable pitches going to those who demonstrate the highest skill levels and ability to manage crowds safely. The system was introduced to maintain quality and safety standards after the area’s transformation from a working market to a major tourist destination in the 1980s.

A Street Performance for the kids

At the end of August, North Main Street closed to traffic as a carnival was held there. A huge crowd of adults and children descended on the street and the place was buzzing. 🙂

I wonder if this could be the same man I photographed on a unicycle in 2006?

Street Musicians on Patrick Street

You’re more likely to see a street preacher or the guy with the “global harming” sign near this spot on St. Patrick’s Street, Cork. Back in 2004 we were treated to some guitar and banjo playing.

I’m a SHOW boy

April 2006 and the Grand Parade was the scene of some merriment. Food and produce stalls were erected and entertainers entertained.

Note that they’re standing on the road? Now they’d be on the large pavement on the library side of the road!

Public Display of Affection

St Patrick’s Street, Cork during the Street Performance World Championships yesterday. Does anyone know who this performer is?

I can’t really comment on any of the performers unfortunately as I was only there for an hour with a bored six year old who had a fixation on buying an Angry Birds hat and balloon animals. There were huge crowds too which meant kids had to at the performance before it started to get a place in front.

I’m glad I caught this moment.

An entertaining statue

A street performer in Galway City last September. Put money in his box and he’d shake a bit and make some noise. Only kids stopped to watch him.

Adults hurried by.
