St Patrick’s Bridge

St Patrick's Bridge

St Patrick’s Bridge in Cork spans the River Lee at the top of St Patrick’s Street and leads on to Bridge Street on the northern bank of the river. Here it is on a particularly cloudy day a few days ago!

More information on the bridge can be found here.

A child’s smile

A smile brightens up anyone’s day. When it’s a child smiling it’s extra special.
This was shot on St. Patrick’s Bridge, Cork just after the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17th. The crowds opened up for a few seconds and I briefly saw father and son.

Yellow Boxes

Yellow boxes on the junction of Bridge Street and Patrick’s Bridge in Cork. It’s illegal to enter a yellow box if you can’t exit as has happened with a few cars here.

This image was entered in the Patterns Around Us competition along with my Autumn Leaf but this was my favourite one because of the strong colours and unusual contrasting effect.

How I did this: take an ordinary photo and clean it up, fixing levels and all the usual things. Duplicate layer, then play around with the top layer and the curves tool, creating a curve with two waves. You’ll see unusual rainbow hues and the colours will be distorted in other ways too. Now, change the mode of the layer. Each mode will make the image look different, but I settled on “Grain Merge” for the final effect here.

PS. the Blogger’s Dinner last night was most excellent. Luigi’s staff did an outstanding job at creating a tasty meal!

Wait to cross

Please wait until the green man shows before crossing the street.

I love the shadows on the ground cast by the sun! Shot on St. Patrick’s Bridge, Cork.

A sunlit river

The sun blazes over Cork City and the River Lee on a fresh October afternoon.

This was taken on Patrick’s Bridge looking out over the River Lee on a wonderfully bright October day. This bridge was opened on December 12th 1861 by the then Mayor, Sir John Arnott. I read a story that the first vehicle across the bridge was a man driving a horse and cart who rushed in front of the Mayor and the crowd. Does anyone know more about this?
