80th anniversary of Warsaw Uprising

Young men climbed on a public toilet in the centre of Warsaw this afternoon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.

At 5pm, sirens rang out and suddenly red flares were lit as a large cargo plane flew overhead. Smoke from the flares filled the air, and it got noticeably cooler as the sun was temporarily blocked.

The flares and smoke cleared within minutes, and a commanding voice in Polish continued to talk to the massive crowd.

A military service attended by uniformed soldiers and two elderly people, one in a wheelchair.

Earlier in the day, we observed a simple military service. Two elderly people were there, and it’s obviously about the Uprising, but if anyone recognises them, I’d love to know more.

This episode of Dan Snow’s History Hits podcast does a great job covering what happened when Poles rose up against heir Nazi occupiers 80 years ago today. I found a Reddit thread about it too.

St Kinga’s Chapel in the Salt Mine

Buried deep underground in the Wieliczka Salt Mine is a huge man made chamber called St Kinga’s Chapel. It’s quite a sight to see after wandering down tunnel and after tunnel. You come across chambers on the way there, but this one is the special one, and it’s a consecrated Catholic Church where they hold religious ceremonies.

It’s 101m underground, 11m high and has a floor space of 465 metres squared.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to spend there as the mine is really busy at this time of year with tourist groups coming in and out all the time!

The Ballycotton Cat

I spotted this feline beauty in Ballycotton a few weeks ago. We’d been shooting the sea and the lighthouse but, of course, my favourite photo is of a cat.

Fireworks Lacking Colour

We waited hours for the fireworks on Spike Island yesterday and, of course, I have loads of photos of the event, which will be posted here in due course.

Here’s one photo, done a little differently, but I like the effect the lines of the fireworks in the air made in the air. Removing the colour simplifies them into the little fingers of flame reaching out in a quick instant.

Seaside Adventures with a Buggy

When the family is enjoying themselves, leave the buggy close by. A lovely day in Dún Laoghaire when Sandycove was thronged, but people made the most of the day, even if the area was a little rocky.

Bridge over little water

The Cloghnagash River in Carrignavar (Carraig na bhFear) flows under a bridge at one end of the village and is where I went exploring recently. While June had been cold and somewhat wet, the river wasn’t very high, and I was able to get down near the river itself afterwards to get a few more photos of the older bridge nearby that has 3 arches. A photo or two of that will appear at some stage.

There’s a nice park on the other side of this bridge and a pavement next to the river that was nice to walk along.

Poolbeg Power station behind gates

I spotted this gate at the Forty Foot in Dún Laoghaire yesterday, and then noticed the decommissioned Poolbeg Power station was visible through the bars. There weren’t any swimmers about at this end of the Forty Foot, so I got a few photos of two iconic symbols of Dublin in one scene!

Paddleboarding with his dog

I was in Dún Laoghaire today on a beautiful afternoon. Sandycove Beach and the Forty Foot were both thronged with swimmers and people relaxing. I wish I brought my togs and a towel, but I had my camera and snapped a photo of this gentleman with his dog out on the water, paddleboarding!

The Rocks of Ballycotton

The rocks of Ballycotton with the sea breaking on them reduced to a fog by a long exposure photo. Ballycotton Lighthouse is visible in the background on an island a few hundred metres offshore.

I was there last night with Blarney Photography Club. A lovely evening taking photos and then a bit of a chat in a local pub.

Not Sleeping in Ardmore

I have an orange t-shirt, but it’s not this lovely bright orange. I love that it matches the orange of the building, and then I noticed afterwards that he’s wearing light blue shorts! It’s orange and blue all the way down!
