Terminal 1 at Heathrow

Terminal 1 at Heathrow, just before we parked. Thanks Matt and Mary for a great few days! Matt bought himself a shiny new Sony A200 on Saturday. It has built in image stabilisation that really helped when I took some shots inside a pub in Eton. If you’re on the look out for a very reasonably priced entry level DSLR I can recommend the Sony A200. Camera Canon EOS 40D Focal length 10mm ISO 400 Shutter speed 1/5000s

Caution! Unprotected High Cliffs

A sign at the base of the short hill below the white pillar near Bantry in Co Cork warns of high cliffs. Unfortunately Adam was asleep in the car and I couldn’t venture any further so I’ll have to return some day to take photos of that pillar. Customer Parking Only

The Organic Shop in Douglas Cork obviously has problems with non-customers parking in front of the shop. Why else would they put a wheel clamp on prominent display next to their warning sign? Lucky for us we were buying something .. Aperture ƒ/8 Camera Canon EOS 40D Focal length 18mm ISO 400 Shutter speed 1/160s

Shame on Fianna Fail

“Shame on Fianna Fail!” declares a sign propped up against the wall of the Crawford Art Gallery in Emmett Place, Cork last weekend. It was left there by someone attending a protest demonstration organised by Alliance for a Better Health Service. I was handed a Socialist Party leaflet, Kathy Sinnott was there and a small crowd cheered and listened to the speakers in the light drizzle that day. I guess it’s no coincidence that Fianna Fail is the second result in a search for fail. While working on the photo I did notice something unusual about the sign. The “on Fianna Fail” part is separate from the “Shame” section. I… Read More

Directions to Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle is that way. Go out the gate, turn right, turn left and park. Right in front of you. I got back to Ireland yesterday afternoon. A mostly uneventful flight home, except for some problems with check in and I had to check in twice more. On the last attempt I got bumped to Economy Plus with more legroom and to an aisle seat thanks to the very nice lady at the gate. The check in computer should be smart enough to offer an aisle seat in Economy Plus to me, even after I’ve declined that upgrade first. An aisle seat is worth the extra $109 because I was… Read More

No visitors on the QE2

Crowds gathered to see the Queen Elizabeth 2 off from Cobh 2 weeks ago, but they weren’t getting on board unless they had a ticket! Aperture ƒ/9 Camera Canon EOS 40D Focal length 18mm ISO 400 Shutter speed 1/200s

Queen Elizabeth 2

Luxury cruise ship Queen Elizabeth 2 tied up at the quayside in Cobh, Co Cork last Thursday. This was moments before she cast off. You can see a tug in the background of this image. It was bitterly cold down on the quay, but we were lucky that the evening sun cast a lovely golden glow over everything. PS. some photography links: The Right Frame of Mind, Design Star, Join a stock photog on a photoshoot. PPS. Just back from the camera club. This image came second overall in the digital section of tonight’s open photo competition. It drew with another image, on equal points. Chuffed! Aperture ƒ/8 Camera Canon… Read More

Carvery Lunch

Carvery Lunch, the fast food of “proper food” IMO. Many will be going to pubs today for their Sunday lunch and it’ll be carvery on offer. Nothing wrong with it of course, but some people are snobs about eating out and want food delivered to their table. Considering the price of carvery food, I can see their point. It’s generally the same price as food in a restaurant, so why not eat somewhere else? Aperture ƒ/6.3 Camera Canon EOS 20D Focal length 10mm ISO 100 Shutter speed 1/40s
