Roadster Wheel

Detail from the wheel of a VW Beetle parked in an iron smith’s yard in Oracle, Arizona. This was taken in 2008 when Automattic visited there and I have quite a few other photos from that visit to show you, if I ever get around to working on them that is!

This was taken with my ancient Canon 20D. I’m half thinking of replacing my now-ageing Canon 40D (the shutter button misfires, it’s not as responsive as it once was, the body is creaking a bit) so I took a quick look at Ebay to see how much a Canon 7D body would cost. Ouch.
Other than the camera body my Sigma 18-200 lens has seen better days too. I had this lens back when I took this photo and it’s the main lens I keep on my camera. It shows too. The zoom extends if the lens is held upside down, bits of shiny plastic have rubbed off, there’s dirt stuck between the rings. Some would say it has character! I say I want a new lens!

Best start saving.

Trafalgar Square Fountain

Part of one of the fountains in Trafalgar Square, London. The Wikipedia page for the Square has an interesting note about the fountains.

When the square was laid out in the 1840s, the fountains’ primary purpose was not aesthetic, but rather to reduce the open space available and the risk of riotous assembly. They were originally fed by water pumped from an artesian well by a steam engine sited behind the National Gallery. In the late 1930s it was decided to replace the stone basins and the pump. The new fountains were built to a design by Sir Edwin Lutyens at a cost of almost £50,000 The old fountains were bought for presentation to the Canadian government, and are now in Ottawa and Regina. The present fountains are memorials to Lord Jellicoe (western side) and Lord Beatty (eastern side).
Further restoration work became necessary and was completed by May 2009. The pump system was replaced with a new pump capable of sending an 80-foot (24 m) jet of water into the air. A new LED lighting system was also installed during this restoration to reduce the cost of lighting maintenance. The new lighting has been designed with the London 2012 Summer Olympics in mind and for the first time will project many different combinations of colours on to the fountains. The new lighting system has a much lower energy requirement and will reduce its carbon footprint by around 90%.

Four Points Cadiz

Cadiz is a city and port in the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. The centre of the city is filled with old alleys and narrow streets. Here’s I shot straight upwards at the junction of 4 such alleys, I think it was here near the local cathedral.

Many years ago I took a similar photo of buildings in San Francisco.

Hold Her Steady

A ship tied up at the quay in Kinsale, Co. Cork last year. The vessel was mostly deserted but we saw revellers boarding it regularly, walking around the deck and then off again!

Rizla

The wrapper of a Rizla rolling papers packet lies on the ground behind a pub in an East Cork town I can’t remember the name of right now.

More on the Wikipedia page of course.
