193 steps to Covent Garden
193 steps, but they’re all going up. We arrived in the Underground station at Covent Garden in the middle of the day when queues for the elevators up were *sooo* long. Actually, I didn’t know this at all. I had dawdled behind taking a few photos and recognised a few faces darting down a side tunnel so I followed them. As I ran after them I snapped the warning sign that read,
This stairway has 193 steps
Do not use
except in an
emergency
Filled with a resignation that it must be the only way I followed them up.
Oh my God. My knees were like jelly by the time I saw sunlight. I never want to do that again. Next time we wait patiently for the elevator.
PS. My brother and I and our future brother-in-law Mike left London yesterday, but Donal is still in the city, and last I heard, was tucking into some spicy food at a Chinese restaurant! Great weekend!

The bicycle butterfly
A bicycle tied to a post on Patrick’s Street, Cork late last November.
I’m heading to London later today for my brother Donal‘s stag. Yes yes, wild weekend, etc etc. I’ll have my camera too of course and I’m staying next to King’s Cross Railway Station so I thought it would be great to go photograph the area. Unfortunately it seems that photography in railway stations and the undergroundrequires a permit. In fact, photography in the UK has become a lot riskier in recent years unfortunately:
- Discordant Photography?
- Threats to Photographers’ Rights?
- Tube: Photography now costs £300 and requires prior permission
For an individual like myself a permit would cost £30 but such a permit requires up to 2 weeks notice. I wonder if they can charge me if I use a telephoto lens from the street when someone opens the front door?

Build ’em up and knock ’em down
We build them up and then knock them down. It’s expected that demolition of empty houses and residential housing estates will be a boon for the construction industry before too long.
This is the junction in front of Emmett Place in Cork. Visible are the Cork Opera House and the cranes in the distance.
WordPress MU 2.7 is finally out. That’s taken quite a while to build but thanks to the GPL it won’t ever be broken down 🙂

Racist Fools
A sticker on a lamp post on Parliament Bridge in Cork encourages racists fools to follow their leader, with an image of Hitler blowing his brains out.

Lounge
The door to the lounge in Cronin’s Pub in Crosshaven, Co Cork. Nice pub, had many a relaxing cup of tea there with the family after a walk around the town.

No Refunds on Costumes
No refunds on costumes in this shop on North Main Street. Silly them, of course there are refunds if the product turns out to be faulty. Signs like those don’t change your consumer rights.
I hate posting the daily photo last thing at night. zzzz

so many people pass me by
Footsteps in the sand speak of many people passing this way.
Shot at Garrettstown Beach in October 2006. A very different shot to my previous Footprints in the sand.
Remember a few weeks ago I explained how I backed up my photos? Good thing I have backups as my first external drive has possibly died. It wouldn’t mount at first, and the drive kept making “spinning up” sounds but it has finally been recognised by Linux. Unfortunately attempts to get even a directory listing result in input/output errors. I’m doing an fsck of it but I’ll probably be buying another drive tomorrow!
Everything is backed up. There’s 411GB, or 8 years of photos on there, and lots of family videos I’d hate to lose. Thankfully they’re safe.
