Window on the City

From the car park on North Main Street, Cork, you can Bruce College and St Mary’s Dominican Priory. I liked how the stark lifeless concrete frame of the multi-story car park contrasted with the variety of materials and colours in the world outside.

Shadows of North Main Street

A month ago, Cork City Council acquired 4 eyesore buildings at the top of North Main Street in Cork. They are in a prominent location and not used for much over the years – I remember a shoe store in one, a clothes store in the place next to it and a retro goods store too. They’ve been mostly derelict for a long time.

Hopefully they’ll be demolished and we’ll see something decent done with the location.

North Main Street sits on one of Cork’s oldest thoroughfares and was actually built on reclaimed marshland. The street runs parallel to what was once the original course of the River Lee before extensive land reclamation in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the Georgian buildings here were constructed using limestone quarried from local Cork quarries, which is why they’ve developed that distinctive weathered patina that photographs so beautifully in black and white.

A Street Performance for the kids

At the end of August, North Main Street closed to traffic as a carnival was held there. A huge crowd of adults and children descended on the street and the place was buzzing. 🙂

I wonder if this could be the same man I photographed on a unicycle in 2006?

Mad about Cork Derilicition

In the midst of a housing crisis and buildings up and down the country are left empty and rotting away.

Follow Frank O’Connor and Jude Sharry on Twitter. The Derelict Ireland hashtag is full of photos of crumbling or boarded up buildings all over the country.

Meanwhile, people live, 6 to a tiny room, in Dublin because that’s all they can afford. There’s something really twisted and greedy about Ireland.

One of my Brazilian friends lives in a one bedroom apartment with 5 other Brazilian girls paying 400 euro each…. That’s above what the landlord would get if they just rented it to a couple, I don’t understand how it’s legal. They have bunk beds in a tiny room. It’s inhumane.

Pure #DerelictIreland

These four buildings on North Main Street, Cork, are an eyesore. Thankfully they have been the subject of a compulsory purchase order by the local council so hopefully they will be saved and developed.

Man Enjoy Cigarette

A man enjoys a cigarette in the same spot I photographed Liam Foley two and a half years ago.
