West Cork for Palestine in Skibbereen

While enjoying the market in Skibbereen I spotted a march in support of Palestine and got a few photos. It was West Cork for Palestine marching. They were a small group but made up for it in noise and their presence.

January 18th, 2025 Palestine Rally in Cork

There was a huge turnout for the pro-Palestine rally in Grand Parade yesterday afternoon. There’s huge support for Palestine in Ireland. Speakers welcomed the cease fire, but I don’t think anyone thinks it’ll hold.

Recently, I found photos of a similar rally through the streets of Cork in 2009. It’s the same issues. Nothing has changed, except to get worse, since then.

Palestinian Flags on the Street

After the Pro Palestinian march walked past and down Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. There is so much anger at what the Israeli army is doing in Gaza.

How can anyone in their right mind support Netanyahu and his Government after all they’ve done? Hamas are terrorists, but Israel bombing cities and homes and hospitals to rubble and killing tens of thousands of people is not going to address their problems. They’re just laying the groundwork for a perpetual war that will never end.

Today saw the biggest rally supporting Palestinians happen in Cork this afternoon. Groups from all over Munster descended on the city and the rally walked down St. Patrick’s Street, chanting and singing. They doubled back through Winthrop Street and back up Oliver Plunkett Street before assembling in the Grand Parade for a number of speakers and singers.

The rally was organised by Cork Palestina Solidarity Campaign.

If I must die, let it bring hope

Those are the words of a Palestinian poet killed by an airstrike in Gaza. I saw them printed on a small white kite on the Palestinian flag carried by a man at the pro-Palestinian rally in Cork today. The rally was organised by the Cork Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Last week another poet, Refaat Alareer, was killed by an airstrike. Alareer was a professor of English literature at the Islamic University of Gaza, where he taught Shakespeare, among other subjects. One of his latest works widely shared, again on X, concludes with the words: “If I must die, let it bring hope, let it be a tale.”

The Guardian, 12th December 2023.

The rally today was the biggest I’ve seen so far, and The Echo Live estimated about 1,000 people took part.

Two of the dogs at the regular rally supporting Gaza that happened in Cork yesterday. Another large crowd gathered, but these dogs weren’t bothered by the noise and people around.

Palestinian Rallies in Valencia and Cork

We happened to come upon a rally in Valencia while we were there recently. A large crowd gathered in a circle around a speaker. I didn’t understand a word they said, but the anger was obvious.

I was in Cork on Saturday and heard a rally announced by a loudspeaker on a van driving down Patrick Street, so I went along to see it.

There was a huge crowd, again. I was near the front of the crowd and watched them display the photos of children killed. Horrendous. It’s barbaric what’s happening in Gaza. What happened on October 7th was terrible, but what’s going on in Gaza is so much worse.
