It’s difficult to TOP West Cork

When the weather is as nice as it is now, there’s nowhere like West Cork. Rolling hills and beautiful countryside, trees heavy with leaves and flowers in bloom, friendly people, and loads of things to do.

One way is Bantry, Ballydehob is the other way. We were headed to Ballydehob when I stopped for a few quick photos.

The Watchful Eye of Sheep’s Head

Several years ago on Sheep’s Head we went for a walk and discovered a lovely horse nearby!

Did you know? Horses have nearly 360-degree vision due to the placement of their eyes on the sides of their heads, allowing them to spot predators from almost any direction without moving their heads.

A Quiet Walk on Cape Clear

Two people walking along the road by the south harbour on a pleasant, warm day in 2013. I haven’t been back there in a long time, but hopefully, I’ll make a return this summer.

Flying Hooves at Dawstown Point to Point

Action photo of a horse race at Dawstown Point to Point in County Cork, showing two jockeys in red and blue silks and white and blue silks riding horses mid-jump over a brush fence, with spectators and orange safety fencing in the background, and another horse visible in the foreground.

A few of the photos I took today at the Dawstown Point to Point. We’ve been very lucky in the last few years that the weather has been good when these races were held!

Rural Banter in Cork

Tucked away on the serene Sherkin Island in County Cork, I stumbled upon a timeless moment that felt plucked from another era. Two older men, clearly no strangers to the soil beneath them, were deep in conversation.

This photo was taken in 2015 while on a visit to the island. I hope they are still living on the island, chatting away.

A pot of gold in the fields of Kerry

This is my desktop background. I love it! After Inch Strand on the way to Dingle in County Kerry the road gets very narrow and winds through the hills before coming down to sea level again. The picture above should be a familiar scene to anyone who has travelled that road!

The day we drove down to Dingle was a stormy one but the sun suddenly broke through the clouds and I had to pull over and get half a dozen shots of the beautiful golden light, the countryside and the rainbow. Stunning, even if I do say so myself!

Since I had one request for print prices, I uploaded this to Red Bubble. Check out A pot of gold in the fields of Kerry over there. Lots of print options.

Some of the highways in Ireland aren’t quite up to international standards.

Angela’s Shop in Fountainstown

Angela’s Shop and Coffee Dock in Fountainstown Co Cork. This shop has been at the beach in Fountainstown for the last 20 years (according to the owner) but I had never ventured inside until today. We were served lovely cups of tea which we enjoyed outside in the blazing sun.

I had hoped to shoot the women’s mini marathon earlier in the day but we had a busy morning with the baby and weren’t ready to leave the house until 1pm. Sorry Ciara, would love to have seen you and the girls in wedding dresses!

Allihies Countryside

The road to the beach at Allihies in West Cork branches in two a few miles from there. This was taken on the scenic route where the road comes out between two hills and you see this beautiful expanse of hills and grassland spread out before you. It’s quite a sight.

My poor photo does little to capture the real splendour of the area!

Rushing through countryside

I shot this through the window of our car while driving back to the ranch after Automattic’s trip to Biosphere 2 in Arizona a few months ago. I love how the foreground blurs but the background and the sky remain motionless and static. Love the movement.
