A Rainbow from Whitepoint to Ringaskiddy
A rainbow stretches across Cork Harbour from Whitepoint near Cobh to Ringaskiddy on the other side, as seen from near Monkstown.

Christian Radich in Cork Harbour
The Christian Radich is a beautiful sailing ship that’s in Cork Harbour this weekend. I took advantage of a foggy morning to get some photos of it and the surrounding docklands.
Christian Radich is a Norwegian full-rigged ship, named after a Norwegian shipowner. The vessel was built at Framnæs shipyard in Sandefjord, Norway, and was delivered on 17 June 1937. The owner was The Christian Radich Sail Training Foundation established by a grant from an officer of that name. Wikipedia

Deep Water Berth at Ringaskiddy
The deep water berth at Ringaskiddy in Cork Harbour yesterday. Driving rain, wind blowing it almost horizontal. The first day of the year was wet. I waited until it quietened down a bit before venturing outside with my camera! 🙂

Roche’s Point Lighthouse
Roche’s Point Lighthouse, at the mouth of Cork Harbour.
I shot this from Camden Fort Meagher last weekend. It was a glorious day and as you can see the fort has a commanding view of the harbour!

Alex, Cork Tugboat
ALEX is the name of a tugboat that operates in Cork Harbour. This photo was actually taken back in 2006 but I found a more recent shot of it as well as a mention on the Port of Cork website.

Crosshaven Evening
Yesterday evening in Crosshaven, Co Cork. It was a beautiful end of the day. Not quite as hot as other days which I was thankful for but many people out and a good atmosphere in the town.

Samskip Pioneer
Samskip Pioneer, a container ship, docked in Cork last weekend. We were down by the Marina in Blackrock on a blistering hot Saturday. While us Irish sat in the shade, Spanish students sat out in the 3pm sun, some wearing long sleeve tshirts! I know, I know, they’re used to the heat but the mind still boggles. I’m useless if the temperature goes above 25C.
Anyway, I went searching and found aprs.fi where you can track the radio transmissions from shipping and found this map showing the location of Samskip Pioneer last Saturday. Login as “V2BT5”, the callsign of the ship. Yes, it’s in Cork Harbour!
The lines might be wrong but then they’re as the crow flies and a big ship doesn’t fly.
What do you think of the border? I adjusted the image in Bibblepro using it’s lens guide which created the border. Normally I’d resize it out but this time I liked the effect.

Whitegate Oil Refinery
Whitegate Oil Refinery in Cork Harbour, as seen from Crosshaven on the other side.
What you’re seeing here is Corkbeg Island in the foreground and this chimney stack in the background. Took me a while to figure that out! Zoom out of either map and draw a straight line through both going south west to pin point where I was standing when I took the photo 🙂

Turning Circle of the QE2
The Queen Elizabeth 2 took several minutes to turn in the harbour outside Cobh in Co Cork. Plenty of spectators watching from boats as the sun started to sink behind the horizon.

Queen Elizabeth 2 in Cobh
The QE2 docked in Cobh last Thursday. This was shot at the bottom of steps down to the water where seaweed made footing precarious. I saw a few people venture down the steps but none went further than half way down. The tide was well out so I was maybe 3m below the quayside, standing in wet and slippery seaweed. The risks I take to get a photo!
Oh yeah, there’s already something gone bust in my new Canon 40D. The pop up flash refuses to pop up unless I prise it open with a fingernail. It tries a few times, gives up and issues an Error 99 and needs to be switched off and on. The same happened to my Canon 20D, but I’m surprised the 40D didn’t last a bit longer ..
