Ruins of the R&H Hall Office

A burnt out building surrounded by fencing.

The shell of the R&H Hall office in Cork Docklands today. It went up in flames on November 23rd, following a fire in the main R&H Hall building on November 10th.

It’s not the first time this block has been damaged by fire. In 2006, grain silos that stood next to this office were damaged by fire and subsequently demolished. Here are a few photos of this office in 2006 and the grain silos behind it.

A sign says "GARDA ROAD CLOSED". The fire brigade are attending and smoke damage is visible in tall silos.

Belem and Grace O’Malley in Cork

Belem and Grace O'Malley in Cork

Belem, a French tall ship, was docked in Cork Harbour until 10am this morning. There was a mostly disappointing sunset last night, but the sky did light up briefly just at the horizon.

The masts and rigging of the Grace O’Malley, the new sail training ship can be seen in the background. It was a lovely evening to be out taking photos.

Storage Tanks on the Docklands

Storage Tanks on the Quays

This won’t win any awards for beauty but it’s part of the old industry of the city along the docklands. While this old building looms overhead lots of people were enjoying a warm June day at the Marina Market. Open air seating was all full with people enjoying their lunches.

I have no doubt these buildings will be gone in a few years, hopefully to be replaced by a thriving community of businesses and homes.

R&H Hall

R&H Hall

The huge bulk of R&H Hall can be seen for miles around, as telecoms companies noticed too when they planted their dishes and aerials on top of the building. It’s a prominent building in Cork Docklands, and surprisingly, I’ve only posted photos of it once before, when it was on fire 3 years ago.

I *have* to head down to the Docklands at some stage and photograph it again, apparently there are plans to redevelop it although I’m sure they’re up in the air given “the current financial climate” as they say.

Shot from in front of the Clarian with a nice long zoom.

Traffic must go left

Air traffic goes that way

Traffic must go left. This is one of those shots that has sat in TODO folder for ages and ages because I liked it, but it was sorely in need of some work. I probably cheated by making it black and white.
