Ferris Wheel No. 3

Ferris Wheel No 3

And the last of the Ferris Wheel shots from about a week ago.

I prefer to take photos and work on them rather than come up snappy titles and accompanying text for blog posts. Facebook, Flickr and social media sites have the advantage here where all you need to do is hit upload and you can completely ignore the title or description. I think most people don’t even read this blurb anyway so I may dispense with it completely except for location and date data. We’ll see.

I’m also considering a Creative Commons license. That’s fine for photos taken in public with nobody recognisable but how does CC cope with the necessity for model release forms? What about photos taken on private property? “All rights reserved” is so much easier and one of the reasons I haven’t switched to a more permissive license.

Rapid Transport on the Ferris Wheel

Rapid Transport on the Ferris Wheel

Another shot of the ferris wheel in the Grand Parade, Cork from last weekend. As I said in my previous big wheel post it wasn’t moving all that fast. It just depends on how the photographer shoots it!

The big wheel in Cork

The big wheel in Cork

We went into Cork City to see the big wheel on The Grand Parade this evening. It was freezing cold but a huge crowd was out braving the frigid temperatures. There were long lines for the wheel and had it been earlier I might have gone up there to take some photos but the wheel never travelled a full circle in one go while we were there. They were continually letting people on and off the machine so any time you see a motion blurred picture of the wheel it’s during those times when the wheel turned a couple of degrees to let passengers off and on.

I got a few nice shots however so there’ll be a few more shots before the new year!

A Cold Sunrise

A Cold Sunrise

Last night was the coldest yet this winter. It’s been amazingly mild so far but this morning cars were encased in a thick frost, the lock on my car was frozen solid and the thermometer in my car said -2C. Lovely sunrise however. Brrrrr.

Fire Dancers in Santa Cruz

Fire Dancers in Santa Cruz

One from a few months back. Automattic held their annual grand meetup in California this year and we split our time between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. On our final night in Santa Cruz there was a small party for everyone and fire dancers appeared to entertain us. I was across the poll from them and guessed a long exposure might work better than an instant of time frozen by a brazen flash in the dark!

Blarney Castle in the Sun

Blarney Castle in the Sun

I walked around Blarney Castle this morning. It was around 2C and it felt it when I was in the shade but the rising sun was glorious and warmed the Castle in a lovely way.

Horse Trough in Parnell Place

Horse Trough in Parnell Place

It’s been many years since horses have drunk from this trough in Parnell Place, Cork but it’s great this old street furniture is still here. There’s a similar one on Alfred Street, in front of Mc Loughlin’s.

Sunset over Cork City

Sunset over Cork City

The sun sets over Cork City as seen from Mayfield yesterday evening. Love the colour of the sun shining on the underside of the cloud!

Sunrise in Playa Blanca

Sunrise in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca lies on the southern coast of the island of Lanzarote. It’s a beautiful town, built entirely with tourism in mind.

Sunrise wasn’t what I had hoped it would be. The sun is blocked by the new Rubicon Marina (it’s so new that Google Maps thought we were swimming in the sea when we were walking around the shops and stalls there!) until it rises a few degrees above the horizon but it did light up the clouds floating high above my head long before it rose in the distance.

In the other direction from where I stood is an extinct volcano. Unluckily for me I didn’t look at the “photos of nearby attractions” in Google Now until the last evening when I saw an amazing sunset over that volcano. Unfortunately the sun had already gone down which means I’ll have to go back there again. What I go through for my photography. The pain and suffering…

Sunlight on the River

Sunlight on the River

Have you ever read Terry Pratchett’s description of the dawn light as it flows over Discworld? Not so much flows, but rather sluggishly crawls over the landscape. Loved that and that’s what comes to mind sometimes when I see photos like this.

Pictured in the grounds of Blarney Castle last week.

River Martin in the Morning

River Martin in the Morning

The River Martin flows through Blarney village and into the grounds of Blarney Castle. This photo was made moments before the sunlight trees one I posted a few days ago. Beautiful morning, and there’s one more photo to come! 🙂
