The current Blarney Castle was rebuilt after a major fire in 1446 and afterwards had an entrance gate different to that which is presently visible.
I was out for a walk a few days ago taking photos when I met two men in high-visibility jackets. They saw me with the camera and one of them stopped me and asked me if I knew about the nearby historical pillar.
In the 1600’s the river flowed in a different course past Blarney Castle. If it still flowed that way, it would go right under the Blarney Woollen Mills factory. He showed me a slight hump in the road which is all that remains of a bridge over that river!
This pillar which is hidden behind a stone wall was originally part of a gateway to Blarney Castle in the 1600s. I’m not certain if it was a river or a land entrance but it’s a shame that it’s now lying unused in a field.

The Land of Blarney
Looking out from Blarney Castle yesterday morning.
Donncha, Robert, Tom and Maryam
From left to right, Donncha, Robert, Tom and Maryam
Robert Scoble and his wife Maryam are in Cork for an IT@Cork conference tomorrow. They visited Blarney this morning with Tom Raftery. I can confirm that Robert did kiss the Blarney Stone, but the pics I got aren’t good enough to publish unfortunately!
He has the “official” photo so I’m sure he’ll scan that in when he gets home!
Wonderful Colour
It’s horrible outside. It’s cold, snow and sleet are falling and the sun hardly warms the air. This reminds me of how nice it was only a few weeks ago. We’re in for a cold weekend!
Winter Trees
Winter Sky
Taken while we were out walking this afternoon. Beautiful but a little cold.
Can, the drain
The Blarney Stone Restaurant
We’re just back from Blairs Inn in Cloghroe. I can definitely recommend that establishment.
I don’t know about this place. To judge by the mail on the ground inside the door I’d say it’s shut for the winter.
Mackey’s in Blarney
Mackey’s is a restaurant in Blarney which I have yet to visit. To be honest, I haven’t been to most of the establishments around here and don’t expect to call to this one any time soon. Their prices are just a little expensive.
In the reflection you can see The Muskerry Arms, Supervalu and a tourist shop.
Still Raining in Blarney
Pictured last Sunday. The sudden downpour didn’t catch this woman out!
Running Through Rain
We were sitting in the car waiting to pick up someone off the bus when it started raining. Suddenly, this girl ran flying past with a big gleeful smile on her face! Unfortunately, she turned her head to look back at her parents just as she passed!
The Gardener’s House
A house in Blarney we spotted while out walking the other day.
