Red Heart

A model walks down a catwalk in Union Square, San Francisco, July 27th 2007.

I was in the city with Automattic and we stayed in a nearby hotel so Union Square was a good spot to get photos. Can’t remember what occasion this fashion show was on for. I think it may have been some fashion school or something!

The Construction of The Grand Parade Cork

Six years ago the Grand Parade in Cork was a major building site. I can’t remember how long construction lasted but it went on for quite some time as they tore up and changed the road layout, widened the pavements and generally made the street look a hundred times better than it was before!

I’ve also posted photos of the construction before, with some of these photos appearing in older posts:

Seven years. That’s a long time to be running a blog and still updating it. I’ve been running Holy Shmoly! even longer but this blog is full of the photographic memories of a city and life over that period.
Most of the time taking photographs is a trade off between being there and looking through a lens. If you’re a photographer you’ll know the feeling. You may have attended a significant event but all you’ll remember was the pain of shooting at high ISO in bad light. When I can dig up old photos for a post like this it makes me glad I took my camera that day into town and snapped a few photos!

The evolution of back pain

A small poster advertises a survey on back pain. It’s a 3 year programme and since this was taken in 2007 it’s nearing completion now!

Taken somewhere in San Francisco.

Tipping Over

I thought I had posted this photo of waves crashing down at Couminole Beach before but no, I have posted several shots of waves at that exposed Atlantic beach but not this one!

I rarely mention WordPress stuff here but if you haven’t upgraded your site to 2.8.4, read this post by Matt. Please upgrade, you’ll be hacked otherwise!

Water rushes in

Waves crash and water rushes in on the rocks at Couminole Beach in County Kerry.

Pretty in Pink

Beautiful, pretty pink flowers in Fitzgerald’s Park, Cork in July 2007. I already posted a photo of these flowers but this one was sitting in my TODO box for so long it had to see the light of day!

Market Avenue

Market Avenue in the centre of Cork City is a tiny little street behind An Brog pub. You know, just outside the fish section of the English Market.

David Rowell & Co

Do you know where Daly’s Bridge in Cork is? Sure you do. If you’ve lived in Cork you’ve probably walked across it even!

After one such excursion I snapped this photo to remind me to look up the printed name above. Turns out David Rowell & Co were a company, “that fabricated wrought iron and wire rope, built suspension footbridges, and structural steel frame buildings”. They traded from 1850 to 1970.
Among their accomplishments is Daly’s Bridge in Cork, or as it’s known locally, “the Shaky Bridge” near Fitzgerald’s Park.

So now you where Daly’s Bridge is!

Dunnes Stores in Ruins

The skeleton of the Dunnes Stores building on Patrick’s Street lies in ruins as building work continued to refurbish it.

Taken in September 2007, Brian took a shot of the building a few days ago in much better state!

Places are still available for the Cork City Photowalk on July 18th! Please leave comments on yesterday’s photowalk post if you have any questions!

Cab 3181

San Francisco will be the gathering place for a large number of WordPress fans at the end of the month as they go to the 2009 San Francisco WordCamp. I won’t be there unfortunately but places are already in short supply, if not all sold out at this stage. It’s going to be a blast!

Here’s a shot I took in 2007 from outside our hotel near Union Square. Love the reflection of the building in the bonnet of the car and glad I got those tourists too!
