• Sunrise on a Cloudy Day

The sun rises behind a hill, lighting up the clouds above and making a silhouette of the trees in the foreground.

The heatwave has broken today, but it’s still quite warm at 18C, but the rain is back. It’s like it never left!

The threatened thunderstorms never materialised in Blarney but the sky is cloudy and produced a lovely sunrise this morning around 7am. The sun rising behind the hills east of Blarney lit up the clouds with lovely warm light.

  • Revolving chess board

A chessboard warped by the intentional sideways movement of the camera.

The squares of a chessboard become a blur as the camera is flung sideways as the shutter opens.

It’s the chessboard in Crosshaven, not that you’d recognise it from the photo!

  • Laurel & Hardy Visit Cobh

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy performing on stage in Cobh, Co Cork.

Laurel & Hardy visited Cobh in Co. Cork today, exactly 70 years after they last visited in 1953! The two gentlemen are looking exceedingly well for their age, I’m sure you’ll agree. They put on a fine show, doing several sketches and singing a few favourites and doing a dance.

Lucky Dog Theatre Productions were in town this weekend for this special anniversary, and were helped by Haulbowline Theatre Group. They were so good. There were lots of laughs. 🙂

  • From Light to Shade

A woman walks up a hill in Lanzarote. She's cover head to ankles in flowing cloth with black and white stripes. A white washed house is behind and she's about to walk from the glare of the sun into the shadow of the house.

A woman walks up a hill in Lanzarote, 2006. The sun is beating down, but she’ll be walking into the small shade afforded by the wall of a house.

  • Rowing on the River Lee

A rowing boat spotted on the River Lee, with the sun at an angle shining with warm, yellow light. Tree leaves are and grass are visible in the foreground while the hill, houses, road and cars are on the opposite bank.

  • The Mysterious Woman with Fiery Locks

A detail from a mural showing a red haired woman. Her hair covers half her face. The Moon is visible in the background of the mural, while the top of the house forms an upside down V and a chimney sits on top.

The mural on Sullivans Quay, Cork, is an eye-catching image of a woman with fiery red hair. It was painted in October 2022 by Belgian painter, Kitsune Jolene.

You can read more about the mural here.

  • Sunrise This Morning

Just before the sun rose this morning it lit up the clouds on the horizon, while deeper clouds remained almost grey but with patches of purple.

Just before the sun rose this morning, it shone on the underside of clouds on the horizon, creating a lovely glow I could see from my home office window.

  • One escape from a darkened room

An emergency exit inside a darkened room, with a wire fence over the window.

The lights are out, the windows are barred. A plant seeks the light close to the window. There’s an exit, an emergency exit.

  • That after sun glow

The orange, red and yellow glow in the sky after the sun has set is caused by the sun shining on the underside of high altitude cloud. It's reflected in the water and the land is in shadow.

I went to the reservoir in Inniscarra yesterday evening to capture the sunset. It had been a glorious day and I saw there would be a smattering of cloud at sunset, which might make for a dramatic picture.

As it happened, there was cloud, but it was mostly at the horizon in a thick, impenetrable bank. The sun set several minutes too early, with barely a glimmer of yellow, but twenty minutes later I was treated to a spectacular display of colour.

AFAIK, it’s caused by the sun shining through the atmosphere at the underside of high altitude clouds on the horizon. If you use the mobile app, Clear Outside, look for high altitude cloud. If there’s a lot of it, and not much low cloud, you’ll probably have a nice sunset. 🙂

  • Eiffel Tower Reflection in Grand Palais Éphémère

The Eiffel Tower reflected in the windows of the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris. The sky is clear and sun has set creating a yellow glow on the horizon. People are seen in the foreground watching the tower.

So many people gathered to watch the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but if they looked behind them, they’d see this magnificent reflection of the Tower.

The Grand Palais Éphémère was empty and dark when I was there, so it reflected perfectly the Eiffel Tower in its windows.

I have to admit, the last time I was in Paris, some 23 years ago, I don’t remember the Grand Palais Éphémère being there at all, but back then I didn’t have the equipment or skill to take a photo like this anyway, and never thought to visit the Eiffel Tower in the evening! It wasn’t in the guide book!
