Armed Soldiers patrol around Montmartre

Four soldiers climb the steps of Montmartre up to the Basilique du SacrĂ©-CƓur de Montmartre on a warm August afternoon. They slowly walked up the steps, without comment or conversation. Walked around the fountains above and up the steps to the Basilica.

It was unnerving, but months later, tourists were being stabbed and violently robbed in Dublin, and I remember people were calling for better security on the streets of the city. Some used Paris as an example and asked why armed soldiers couldn’t patrol the streets.

I think a better way of solving this issue is to make Dublin into a proper living city, with actual local people living in the city, not tourists in an Airbnb. Some chance.

David McWilliams called it, “People Before Bonnet” in the latest episode of his podcast. Worth a listen.

The Ballincollig Regional Park Weir

The weir in Ballincollig Regional Park collapsed in 2014, but this photo was taken many years before that, in 2003. Repairs to the weird have been delayed over and over again, unfortunately.

We thought the summer rain was bad..

Remember when people thought the rain in late July and August 2023 was bad? What about Storm Isha yesterday, eh? Another storm on the way too.

The start of June was blisteringly hot. It was so hot I preferred to stay inside out of it. Nobody seems to remember that.

Oh, the photo above is obviously not recent. It’s last August, during the wet spell.

Ian Bailey and The West Cork Way

Ian Bailey, the man accused of murdering a French woman, Sophie Toscan du Plantier, died today. Here he is in 2019, when he was selling his book, “The West Cork Way”, at a market in Skibereen.

The Fiery Red Tree

Atop a high stone tower in Clogheenmilcon Sanctuary Walk, near Blarney, is a sculpture of a tree. It was created by sculptor, Don Cronin and is impossible to miss if you’re walking in the sanctuary.

This was taken last night when temperatures had dropped to -4.5ÂșC. I didn’t stay out very long, but braver souls from Blarney Photography Club did!

Let it snow in Arizona

Many years ago, on a cold January day in Arizona we came across a small yard where metal works were being sold. One of those was an unusual metal robot with a red and white hat on it’s head, saying “LET IT SNOW”.

It didn’t snow, but it was cold at night!

Hussey’s Folly and the green fields

On a lovely evening in August 2020, we were visiting Dingle in Co. Kerry. A walk out to Hussey’s Folly is always on the cards, I think this evening was the last time we saw Fungie too. He was swimming in the bay, just off shore, surrounded by boats, as he always was.
