• John Sullivan

This is John Sullivan, a man we met near the beach at Allihies in West Cork a few days ago. He’s quite a remarkable man, especially as he will be 91 in June. I’ll be very happy with myself if I’m as fit and healthy as he is when I celebrate my 91st birthday!

The photo isn’t the best I could manage but I only took the one shot and wanted to share it. There was a very strong light behind him from the afternoon sun and I used the on-camera flash to fill in the shadows as best I could.

  • The stag in the English Market

I remember seeing a shot Alkos took of this stag or deer on a wall near the English Market in Cork. I must dig up a link to it. Anyway, that shot was on my mind when I took this photo and I really like how it turned out!

  • Boats and fishing tackle

Boats and lobster pots (I presume?) lie on the quay in Bantry. This area is a must see for photographers. There are so many things to see you could spend hours there just snapping away!

A small grocery shop on the main square in Bantry. It had all sorts of old fashioned goods for sale.

Cows gather in the shed against the howling wind and cold at Allihies. No room for any more though!

  • A place to live in the trees

I noticed this small hut while out walking one afternoon on the ranch in Arizon last January. Bit of a squeeze I bet!

  • Junk in the desert

I’m not sure what this metal object used to be, but it was sitting in the desert on the ranch in Arizona. I loved the contrasting textures and light and shadows so I had to shoot it!

  • An Fear Marbh san uisce

An Fear Marbh, or “The Dead Man” in English lies off the coast of Co. Kerry. I posted another photo of the island taken on the same night as this one here, but it was such a beautiful evening I took quite a few shots!

  • Blarney on April 24, 2008

I had to get the car fixed today. A ball bearing was broken in one of the rear wheels and driving was like one of those modded cars with huge exhausts. Noisy and annoying. So, I took the car down to Blarney Auto Centre where they sorted it out this afternoon. I took the opportunity to get some exercise in by walking back home and took a few photos. Enjoy!

  • Naked in Ireland

I’ve mentioned Spencer Tunick a few times already on this blog and it seems he’s coming to Ireland soon and bringing his unusual brand of nude photography with him.

Internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Spencer Tunick will be offering the public the chance of a lifetime to become part of his first back to back city art project in both Cork and Dublin this June. Multiple groups of nude participants will be photographed outdoors by Tunick as part of his series of installations that have previously taken place in cities around the world including New York, Amsterdam and Mexico City.

    Cork: 17th June 2008
    Dublin Docklands: 21st June 2008

And, considering the really bad weather lately, let’s hope the sun shines when he’s taking his photos. From the FAQ:

What will happen if it’s raining or very cold weather?
The installation will happen rain or shine. The installation will happen if the weather is cold, but the artist will work as quick as possible to make his art.

No, I won’t be volunteering. Good luck if you’re going!

  • Sheila

This boat, Sheila, has been tied up in Cobh for I don’t know how long. This photo was taken in 2006 but the last time I was in Cobh around this area I remember seeing it. I wonder what’s the story with it?

  • Cobh boats and cathedral

Boats tied to the quay in Cobh, Co. Cork. Cobh Cathedral is visible in the background. I could have removed that wire but it was a pain to get the details of the Cathedral in.
