Dunnes Stores in Ruins
The skeleton of the Dunnes Stores building on Patrick’s Street lies in ruins as building work continued to refurbish it.
Taken in September 2007, Brian took a shot of the building a few days ago in much better state!

Worldwide Photo walk in Cork
On July 18th, photographers all over the world will be holding photowalks. There’s going to be events in Belfast, Dublin and Cork that day, and who knows. Might be a few more around the country by the time that day arrives!
I’ve just filled in a few details on the Cork Photowalk page on the Worldwide Photo Walk website. You can register on that page. While places are limited to 50, I’d be surprised if we get that many.
I think 2pm is a good time to start. It’ll give people a chance to grab a bite to eat, the city should be busy with shoppers and tourists, and the sun will have passed overhead, giving us some shade to play with. Is that too late? Too early? What about 10am in the morning? Town is nice and quiet in the morning but some people aren’t up that early at the weekend!
If you’re not in Cork on the 18th, there’s also a Dublin photowalk and a Belfast photowalk too. Dublin one is almost booked out though so hurry to register!

San Francisco will be the gathering place for a large number of WordPress fans at the end of the month as they go to the 2009 San Francisco WordCamp. I won’t be there unfortunately but places are already in short supply, if not all sold out at this stage. It’s going to be a blast!
Here’s a shot I took in 2007 from outside our hotel near Union Square. Love the reflection of the building in the bonnet of the car and glad I got those tourists too!

Nature invades our spaces
Nature starts to reclaim the works of man as soon as he turns his back. It’s inevitable as this photo of the steps up to a house in Sunday’s Well shows.
My own garden is the picture of neat and tidy lawn without a single blade of grass out of place. I wish!

Honeymoon Cabaret
Yesterday we had lunch in Ammicus, in Douglas while outside the stalls of a market sold all sorts of foods and produce. The road was closed off to traffic for street performers to entertain the crowds. Unfortunately rain probably dampened the spirits of all involved. The showers were really bad!
Here’s Marc and Svetlana Buttersworth, the Honeymoon Cabaret, performing their act to a delighted crowd (with brollies). They were so entertaining, kept the crowd going, and bravely carried on through all but the worst of the showers! Go see them if you hear they’re performing near you!

One Bridge to Mizen Head

We saw Honeymoon Cabaret perform their unique brand of street theatre in Douglas this afternoon and very enjoyable it was too! Hopefully I’ll post a photo or two tomorrow. I went a bit mad with the camera and it’s hard to choose just one image!

Gamma Radiation Survey Meter
A very specialized device sits in a cupboard in the lighthouse at Mizen Head, County Cork.
I have to wonder why a “Gamma Radiation Survey Meter” would be needed in a lighthouse at the southern tip of Ireland though. Not much call for radioactivity detectors in this country.
Nuclear powered lighthouse anybody?
PS. This is a slightly tinted b/w image. Many of the images in B/W Magazine seem to be tinted which was the inspiration for doing this.

Kilkee Beach
Kilkee Beach in County Clare is a beautiful stretch of sand going on forever and ever. Well, seems like it, it’s a massively long beach and on the day we accidentally discovered it the sun was beating down on us. Hooray!
I have no idea what RMA stands for. That little rock was sitting next to the shell where I found it.
