St Patrick and the Volkswagen
A Volkswagen Beetle parked across the road from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork. The church was built in 1840. The car, not so old.

Cobh in Black and White
A dump of the b/w images I shot in Cobh over the weekend. It was a strictly “stroll around and do nothing” day (so sorry Conor for not calling in!) as Adam was being minded by my sister.
As I said a few days ago, I shot everything in black and white and I’m pleased with the results. From about the shots of the rope on I used RAW+Jpeg but I still prefer the b/w images.

It’s almost noon and I’m at the top of Patrick’s Hill taking photos of the Northside of Cork City. Pictured is St. Anne’s in the foreground, the County Hall in the background and lots in between!

Soiree

an evening party or social gathering, esp. one held for a particular purpose: a musical soiree. (source)The first time I heard anyone use the word “soiree” was when my wife’s friend spoke about organising a party at her home. My wife uses it too. Must be posh, I married well!
Today I decided to see the world in black and white after reading an article in Photography Monthly about Chris Friel, a colour blind photographer in the UK, who shoots that way.
I set my shooting mode to Monochrome, quality to Jpeg and added a red filter (although I’m not certain it had much effect from testing..) and fired away. After 3 or 4 shots I chickened out and set the quality mode to RAW+Jpeg so at least I have the full colour image to work with in the RAW image.I must say, I’m pleased with the results! Black and white doesn’t work for every image. They were rather flat out of the camera but a bit of dodging and burning helped add some punch. Hopefully I’ll find time to work on a few more shots over the next few days so you can see just what black and white images “out of the camera” can look like! (versus conversion by some filter or the channel mixer.)

On the Boardwalk
Phew! What a day! Today we had a great photowalk in Cork. I hesitate to say this, but I think it was probably the most enjoyable photowalk I’ve ever been on.
We started out in the Montenotte Hotel, with tea and scones and a chat. After refreshments we headed up on the roof for a stunning view of Cork City and the Blackrock side of the suburbs. I’ve never seen into Pairc Ui Chaoimh from above like that before!
Soon after we headed down to Dillon’s Cross, and on down Summerhill. Halfway down we took a detour here where we got splendid views of the train station and Julia, the new Swansea Cork Ferry that will operate from March next year.
Snapping all the way, we headed into town and on to the Bar and Grill on the Boardwalk, pictured above. That’s my son Adam, who’s contemplating if he should go in, or stay outside where he can run around. Hungry dad won out in the end and had a delicious burger.
I had to leave after lunch, but four lucky photographers went out on the speedboat and by at least one account it was well worth doing!
I just want to thank the following for helping to make today such a success:
- Pat O Neill and Damien Mulley who helped organise things
- The Montenotte Hotel for laying on tea and scones, and letting us up on their roof (and of course for the free and subsidised rooms)
- The Boardwalk Bar and Grill who put on a sumptuous lunch for us and put up with curious photographers scrambling over their water feature and poring over the unusual Harley Davidson section at the back!
- And finally, I want to thank everyone who came along today and really made the photowalk so enjoyable. I hope I have everyone here: Jamie (and Nora!), Ryan and Julie, Katie, Rudy, Paul, Pa, Mark, Kevin, Will (better late than never!), my wife Jacinta and son Adam who joined us later, and of course Pat who had dusted off a long forgotten digital camera to walk with us today.
