  • Blarney Castle in the Snow

Snow fell last night in Ireland and everything came to a halt as people all over the country gasped in wonder at the strange white stuff on the ground. Thankfully it looks like it won’t last. We’re not equipped to deal with this sort of weather at all!

Blarney Castle opened later than usual but the paths were all cleared so of course I had to go tramping away in the snow covered grass..

  • Rijnvelds Early Sensation

If you go down to Blarney Castle now you’ll see 30,000 daffodils blooming in the beautiful gardens there. In my last post I joked that the daffodils were confused but it’s a plant that flowers early and tolerates the cold so it’s perfect for this time of year.

Be sure to check out Ferbal O’Callaghan’s beautiful photo of the daffodils too and check out the Friends of Blarney Castle Facebook group where there are more pictures and information.

There’s also the SodShow interview with Paul O’Sullivan and Adam Whitbourn of Blarney Gardens here and here if you want to know more about the gardens there.

  • Confused Daffodils in Blarney Castle

There are some confused daffodils in Blarney Castle this year, out in January! I hope the rest of January is mild enough for them.

I posted a similar photo on Instagram a few hours ago, just in case you’re getting a strange sense of déjà vu.

  • Cork Docklands Grain Silo

John Finn’s superb photo of this grain silo that he posted today on Facebook (unfortunately you’ll need to be friends with him to see it) prompted me to dig up this photo of the same building from my output queue.

It was shot in 2014 when we went exploring the docklands one afternoon and I photographed the demolition of the Miag Grain Silo. I love that I caught a flock of birds swooping around the building!

  • Los Jameos del Agua

This striking blue pool is part of Los Jameos del Agua built into the ground of Lanzarote using the same lava tunnel La Cueva de los Verdes that was formed by the eruption of La Corona Vulcano. Of course, César Manrique was responsible for this beautiful design.

This pool is called, “Jameo Grande”. There’s also an internal pool inside the tunnel that’s home “to over a dozen endemic species of great scientific interest” according to this site.

  • Star Trails in Utah

Star trails around the North Star, Polaris in Utah, United States.

This is a long exposure shot of 930 seconds shot at f/8. The night was fairly clear but cloud crept in during the long exposure. It was a glorious night. We were up in the mountains and away from most light pollution apart from the huge hotel 200m away to the right but you have to have some comfort, right?

Next time I’m going to try stacking shorter exposures using StarStaX and I have to avoid “bright” foreground objects. This photo was pushed too much and shows too much noise. 🙁

  • Deep Water Berth at Ringaskiddy

The deep water berth at Ringaskiddy in Cork Harbour yesterday. Driving rain, wind blowing it almost horizontal. The first day of the year was wet. I waited until it quietened down a bit before venturing outside with my camera! 🙂
