When Dawn Breaks in the Canaries
Sunrise at this time of year is rather easy as it’s at a reasonable time. Not too early, and not too late either. When the sky turns golden I pick up my camera! Aperture ƒ/8 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 94mm ISO 100 Shutter speed 1/200s

Light, Table, Window, Darkness
Sometimes the best photographs are the ones where you strip everything away and just let light do the talking. Simple. Aperture ƒ/3.5 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 24mm ISO 160 Shutter speed 1/100s

Bachelor’s Quay at Twilight
Blue hour is that magical window between sunset and full darkness when the sky becomes this gorgeous gradient from deep blue to warm orange. That’s what I saw on a cold December evening looking across the River Lee at Bachelor’s Quay. Aperture ƒ/4 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 24mm ISO 12800 Shutter speed 1/320s

Millennium Bridge After Dark
The Millennium Bridge in Cork doesn’t wobble like the Shakey Bridge but it probably sees a lot more foot traffic as it links Pope’s Quay and Kyrl’s Quay and Cornmarket Street. The bridge was built in 2004. I have some photos of that which I may dig up and link from here later. Aperture ƒ/2.8…

The Cliff Sitters at Clogher Strand
When we arrived at Clogher Strand for a photography session last month I spotted a group of teenagers sitting in the grass. I just realised something. They weren’t looking at their phones! Aperture ƒ/6.3 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 132mm ISO 2500 Shutter speed 1/500s

Playing With Fire
Burning steel wool reflects in the still waters, tracing arcs of fire through the air. Aperture ƒ/10 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 44mm ISO 320 Shutter speed 10s

Seagull Becomes Lunch Inspector
This seagull had his eye on that man’s lunch. I wonder if he got any crumbs. They have no fear! Aperture ƒ/5 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 57mm ISO 100 Shutter speed 1/800s

Up and Away
I like photographing multi-storey car parks. Usually there’s a good view from the top floor, and I’ll always find something interesting inside too. Aperture ƒ/8 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 24mm ISO 16000 Shutter speed 1/125s

Kids and Mazes on Grand Parade
Cork was wrapped in a thick fog on a mild Christmas Eve in 2005. Children were running around a painted maze on the ground near the National Monument on Grand Parade and having a great time. Twenty years ago! So much has changed. Aperture ƒ/3.5 Camera Canon EOS 20D Focal length 18mm ISO 400 Shutter…

Long Exposure at Ireland’s Edge
The sea retreats in its forever battle with the sand. Clogher Strand in late December. The day was cold but we had fun. Aperture ƒ/20 Camera ILCE-7RM5 Focal length 28mm ISO 100 Shutter speed 2.5s

Sullivan’s Quay After Dark
I’ve photographed Sullivan’s Quay plenty of times but this was a little experiment shooting in highlight-priority mode. I brightened it up later but I like the way it came out and love the yellow reflected light on the River Lee. Here’s Sullivan’s Quay at sunset many years ago from much the same view point! Aperture…
