Long Gone in Cork

Way back in 2005 before the Elysian was built. Look at all the buildings that are gone now:

  1. The warehouses in the foreground are gone.
  2. The Sextant was demolished last year.
  3. Cork Bonded Warehouses are gone a long time.
  4. In the far background many new buildings have gone up.

This view from the City Hall car park is no longer possible of course because the Elysian and new development along Alert Quay gets in the way. The new development is welcome but building more and more offices and hotels is a mistake. We need more residential development.

Rukos Skateboard Air Time

Catching the air on a Rukos skateboard in Emmett Place, Cork. September 2005.

I published a few more photos here a couple of years ago. You’ll recognise the skateboarder in one or two of the images!

The Ruins of Lebowskis

The Ruins of Lebowskis

Lebowskis on Marlboro Street in 2005. The Spyglass Tavern is now in this building I think if Google Maps is up to date. I wasn’t ever in Lebowskis and haven’t visited the Spyglass Tavern either.

Edit: The Atlas Bar is in that building now, not the Spyglass Tavern.

A Statue in the Octagonal Court

A statue in the Octagonal Court in the Vatican remains nameless despite my best efforts. It stands to the side of the Laocoön and I even found it on Google Maps but the pedestal is stands on doesn’t have an inscription!

Love on the Lee

St Patrick’s Bridge in the background, pictured from Mary Elmes Bridge. A love lock on the fence but thankfully there aren’t many on it. Love locks are a serious problem for structures as they add unplanned weight.

Happy holidays! Hope you had a nice day today!

Last Minute Shopping at O’Donovans Butchers

O’Donovan’s Butchers on Princes Street is long gone but back in 2002 I took this photo on Christmas Eve of shoppers getting food for their dinner the next day. 19 years ago to the day.

December Fireworks

Fireworks illuminate the park beside Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Blackrock tonight. The fireworks were part of the “Magic Nights By The Lee – A Winter Solstice” series of events but unfortunately due to Covid 19 they didn’t tell anyone where the fireworks would be launched from as reported by The Echo earlier today,

For public health reasons, viewing sites will not be provided at launch locations. However, the wider public is invited to enjoy the display from a safe, socially distanced vantage point and can tune in to Red FM for the accompanying audio.

Local residents were informed and a small crowd gathered to watch. It was a superb show, with a huge variety of colours and explosions. Made for a hectic ten minutes while I pressed the shutter button again and again hoping for good shots!

Light Trails and the Ferris Wheel

I went into town today and after finding parking around Gilabbey Street I wandered around Grand Parade until the sun set and got a few photos of the ferris wheel there.

No stalls this year which is disappointing but with Covid19 on the rampage it’s understandable. Masks were seen inside and out among young and old.

There was a great festive mood in the city. Lots of families around, lots of music playing and people sitting outside shops and cafes drinking coffees, eating hot food and cold. I was amazed to see kids eat ice cream but it was a nice evening, not too cold in the city.

Light Trails in the Car Park

The lights of cars in the car park of Blackpool Shopping Centre blur into ghostly lines.

This photo is built from 4 separate images taken at the exact same spot, merged into one in Photoshop.

I thought I had posted a similar photo to this one but I cannot find it. It’s lost to the mists of time. Annoying..
