Teenage boys watching the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cork in 2003. They were sitting on street signs at the bottom of Patrick’s Hill as the parade walked past down McCurtain Street.
On a particularly foggy morning in December 2002 I wandered around Ballincollig Regional Park. I photographed the weir that morning in the mist. Wasn’t much to be heard except the rushing of the water.
Some fifteen years later the centre of the weir would collapse. The OPW may rebuild it at a cost of over €1m. Hopefully that happens.
We visited the graveyard adjoining the ruins of St. Declan’s Cathedral on our trip to Ardmore. The view from there out to sea and over the local town and beach is glorious!
The first time I visited here in 2005 I slipped while taking photos, my camera hit the ground hard and something broke inside it. Luckily I didn’t drop my camera this time, even though I did slip again. Only my leg was hurt but I kept my balance and stayed upright.
I found an informative walk through video made in the graveyard you should watch.
A brave young man surfs the waves at Ardmore, Co Waterford this afternoon. It was freezing, cold winds sucked any warmth from exposed skin but this guy was out there battling the waves!
A trip to Valentia Island is not complete without a visit to the lighthouse on Cromwell Point. The lighthouse is still used to guide vessels through the northern entrance of Valentia Harbour past Harbour Rock.
There’s a guided tour of the lighthouse including of course a run down of the history of the area, and afterwards a nice cafe where you can have a refreshing cup of tea and a cake.
Flowers and candles on the ground on St. Patrick’s Street, Cork after a vigil in memory of Ashling Murphy, a 23 year old woman who was murdered on January 12th this year while out jogging in the middle of the afternoon.
Violence against women is still happening. I don’t think it will ever stop. Fergus Finlay wrote an excellent essay saying, “I have turned a blind eye to cheap, vulgar sexism — it is all men”.
Way back in 2005 Carroll’s Quay in Cork looked quite different. The apartment block that sits there now was only half finished. The block behind it was nearing completion and what used to be a medical office was exposed to the elements when builders demolished half of that building.
