This is Betancuria. Tucked into a valley surrounded by arid, scrubby hills, this tiny settlement was actually the island’s capital for over 400 years. We didn’t have much time to explore the town, but it was really nice. Somewhere you must visit if you’re in Fuerteventura.

Look, I’m not saying Burger King has started its own airline, but the evidence is right there in the photograph. The King of the Burger was coming to visit.

The sky was mostly clear on the morning I visited Salinas del Carmen in Fuerteventura with Finbarr. The sky grew brighter quickly and within moments what was dark was a lovely glow. It didn’t last long, and suddenly the day had begun.

I was looking out the window, about to take a photo when I spotted a man carrying a suitcase. He’d probably just arrived, but he’d missed breakfast. Pretty decent breakfast too.

A young woman walked past me carrying her dog. I had to get a photo. Bonus points for the lady in the poster watching me. 🙂

I was walking by the harbour in Castillo Caleta de Fuste, passing some shops and hotels when I saw yet another hotel but this one was vaguely interesting. There were plenty of mobility scooters around the place and these two ladies had fun with one as they drove up and down a nearby road, blaring music and laughing.

The recent rains in Fuerteventura have transformed the island. If you look at this location in Betancuria on Google Maps you’ll see a dusty field, and the street view shows mostly bare ground with bushes planted here and there.
