So the first thought that came to my mind was...."whats that seasgul from the lake 5 miles away doing way out here by its self.?"....( it was starting to get alittle dark but with all the snow it still had a brightness about it ) Then I noticed this bird was actually flying along with my driving and then very much to my suprise when I almost came to a complete stop to get across the old rail road tracks because the crossing was rough.....the bright white bird flew over towards me and lit on the RR crossing sign maby only 8 ft from me, It then looked straight at me and gave me the suprise of my life........It was not a white gull..........it was a pure....pure....pure white owl !!! very large for an owl......or maby it would be better said by saying, "by no means was it a small owl"......I have lived here 50 years and have never ever seen a white owl.......I regret not totally stopping the truck to stop and stare at the owl but I was partially on a RR track and thats not a good place to sit and ponder.......WHAT KIND OF OWL DID I POSSIBLY SEE ?......Any comments would be appreciated !...... It has never been called a "white" owl. The female is speckled as you can see. The male is pure white and slightly smaller. She lives with a male. He was in the outdoor enclosure with her. Too bad you didn't get his photo since it would have been nice for a comparison. Males are always smaller than females in the bird of prey group. The owl's eyes are stationary in the sockets.
