The gull fight
Posted on 04 July 2009

Gulls fight over a few crumbs of bread at the Lough in Cork. Taken during a photowalk there last year.

Hi Donncha,
I came across “inphotos.org” by accident, while looking for information about 5D’s custom settings. How surprised I was when I saw a picture from St. Patrick’s Street as the site’s welcome banner. I have been staying in Cork for 7 months now. I’m going back to Poland at the end of July, but that’s a pity, since I have fallen in love with the city. Head over heels.
And I just love photographing it. In evenings, light bounces from windows to walls on the opposite side of streets, Lee bounces reflections, and people are welcoming towards a photographer (it has never occurred to me in Lodz, my home town, that people would actually ASK to have a photo of them taken in the street when seeing a man with a tripod — here it is common!).
You will recognize some Cork subjects in my photo.net gallery (photo.net/photos/podstawek), and I have many more “in preparation”. But what I actually wanted to say is that your pictures are just amazing. People, birds, even buildings, are so lively, dynamic, full of expression… and impressive!
I’ve read many books about Cork recently, including the photography albums you know for sure, like “Cork in Old Photographs”, “Fr. Browne’s Cork”, etc. Almost every book about Cork, be it an album or a narrative, includes a statement that Cork is very unique, almost a country within a country… I would add that it is not only unique, but also very close to people’s hearts; a town you don’t easily go away from. Photographs like yours do this amazing place justice. Please keep on shooting!
Glad you like the blog, and Cork City too! You might be interested in a photowalk on July 18th here in Cork. I’ve posted details here but it’s part of a world wide photowalk on the same day.
Must go chase up somewhere to go have a drink after.
Thanks for inviting me to the walk! I’ll be happy to join.
I registered at the Web page and clicked “Join the walk”, but received no confirmation. I hope I have been registered.
See you there!
ps.: The plan is great, but there may be problem with the Shandon tower, as there won’t be enough space for 50 people up there
.
