There are always boats moored in the section of the Owenabue River called “Drake’s Pool”. This was a shot I took last weekend while out walking with my family there. Quite frosty but many people out walking the light from the setting sun was amazing.

Yes, this location is associated with Sir Francis Drake:

The name reveals the linkage to Sir Frances Drake who in 1743 took refuge in these waters from the Napoleonic forces as they patrolled around Cork Harbour. His hiding place worked and he lived to fight another day. (source)

PS. The name Owenabue River fascinates me. I wonder if Owenabue is the English phonetic spelling of “Abhainn Bui”? That would be “Yellow River” in Irish. Where did that name come from?

St Finbarre’s Cathedral silhouetted against the sunset in Cork yesterday. It was freezing cold but the skies were mostly clear and snow hasn’t fallen in the City or here in Blarney either yet.

The country is going through a recession but you wouldn’t know it. After driving around Parnell Place twice I parked in Merchant’s Quay but had to park on the roof because the place was full. Many of the shops were very busy, and the streets were crowded with shoppers.

So cold though.

PS. the version of gthumb in Ubuntu 10.10 sucks. Missing now is the “Duplicate” menu item, and I can’t drag photos from one folder to another. Grrr. It is faster however.

As you may have already guessed, that’s not the dawn. It’s the lights of Cork City (and Blarney) shining and into the sky in a long exposure shot I made last August.

I had meant to mention this sooner but 2 weeks ago I was shocked to hear about the death of Debbie Metrustry (@debbiemet), a wonderful person I had the pleasure of conversing with by tweet and by email over the course of the last year or so. She even won a print on this blog last year, but between this and that I never got around to sending it to her. I hope I can get in touch with her family at some stage and offer it to them instead.

Debbie’s blog on WordPress.com is still there and will be as long as the service is there (which is forever, right?), I’ve seen to that.

If you knew Debbie you might like to read the reaction from other people who knew her.

We called over to a friend’s house yesterday evening and even though I had heard there would be an eclipse I completely forgot about it. My Dad even texted me at 6.25pm that it’d be happening between 7pm and 8pm but I still forgot. Lucky he rang my wife and she reminded me of the event!

Unfortunately I only had my Sigma 18-200 zoom. The Canon 75-300 was at home so this is a severely cropped shot of the moon. I thought there was going to be a full eclipse but it wasn’t to be and only a shadow fell across the face of our nearest celestial neighbour.
